Queen Mother used to say the secret of being a beloved Royal was
'never complain, never explain, and never be heard speaking in public...'

The Duchess told Bradby that it was essential for her to 'thrive' and 'feel happy', warning simply enduring unwanted scrutiny is 'not the point of life'.
She told how she 'really tried to adopt the British sensibility of a stiff upper lip' - but believes burying emotions like that can only lead to 'damage.'
In what was the first on-screen interview since becoming a mother, the American former actress admitted to feeling 'vulnerable' during her pregnancy with Archie under the media spotlight.

PART①

Tom Bradby and Meghan Markle's interview in full

Meghan Markle was interviewed on last night's ITV documentary, which was conducted during her tour of Africa with Prince Harry.
He is a transcript of what was said, as she opens up about her struggles with the media and the public scrutiny she now faces:
Tom Bradby: 'This has been quite a journey really, one way or another. Up in the bush I did talk to Harry about the pressure you're under. Its clear, and its clear from last night's statement the pressure you're under. You've talked about the pain behind the brave face. I don't think a lot of people really understand what that is, so perhaps you could give us an idea of what the last year has been like?
Meghan: 'It's hard. I don't think anybody can understand that. In all fairness, I had no idea, which probably sounds difficult to understand, but when I first met Harry, my friends were so excited, my US friends were happy because I was happy. But my British friends, they were sure he was lovely, but they said I shouldn't do it because 'the British tabloids will destroy your life.' Because I'm American I very naively didn't get it. I'm not in any tabloids. It's complicated.'
Bradby: 'I talked to him up in the bush about mental health and the impact on his mental and physical health and he is obviously very concerned about protecting you and protecting you from what his mother went through. This is obviously an area one has to tiptoe into very gently, but I don't know what the impact on your physical and mental health and all the pressure that you clearly feel under.
Meghan: Look, any woman especially when they are pregnant you're really vulnerable and so that was made really challenging, and then when you have a new born – you know… 'And especially as a woman, it's a lot. 'So you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed it's, well…' 'Also thank you for asking, because not many people have asked if I'm OK. But it's a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.'
Bradby: 'And the answer is, would it be fair to say, not really OK, as in it's really been a struggle?'
Meghan: 'Yes.'
Bradby: 'Look, the pressure you are under is pretty obvious, its been obvious to me in a growing sense throughout this tour and before it started I kind of knew some of the picture but not all of it, so can you put up with this? Can you deal with it, can you manage it, can you handle it and what happens if you can't?
Meghan: 'I've said for a long time to H – that's what I call him – it is not enough to just survive something. That's not the point of life. You've got to thrive and feel happy. 'I really tried to adopt this British sensibility of a stiff upper lip.
Bradby: It has its advantages I guess.
Meghan: I tried, I really tried. But I think what that does internally is probably really damaging. I never thought that this would be easy, but I thought it would be fair and that's the part that's really hard to reconcile. I take each day as it comes.
Bradby: The counter argument is that you have this power, this privilege, you have this fame, this wealth, and that comes with scrutiny. Sometimes its good, sometimes its bad. How do you counter that argument?
Meghan: Things are fair. That completely tracks with me if things are fair. I'm the first one to go, 'oh my gosh I'm so sorry I would never do that.' When people are saying things that are just untrue and they have been told they are untrue but they are allowed to still say them, I don't know anybody in the world that would feel like that's ok. And that's different to just scrutiny. What would you call that?
Bradby: I don't know..
Meghan: It's really a different beast. You know? I think the grass is always greener. You have no idea. Its really hard to understand what its like. I know what is seems like it should be. Its a very different thing. The good thing is I've got my baby and I've got my husband, and they're the best.

PART②

'My British friend said to me 'I'm sure he's great but you shouldn't do it''

The Duchess of Sussex reveals she was warned not to marry Prince Harry because 'British tabloids will destroy your life'

'I've said for a long time to H – that's what I call him – it is not enough to just survive something. That's not the point of life. You've got to thrive and feel happy.
'I really tried to adopt this British sensibility of a stiff upper lip. I tried, I really tried.
'But I think what that does internally is probably really damaging.'

Meghan was asked about the interest people have in her, not only as a member of the royal family but also of her experience as a woman of colour in Britain, in the US, and in being part of 'the world's most famous mixed-race couple'.
She said: I would hope that the world would get to a point where you just see us as a couple who is in love.
'I don't wake up every day and identify as anything other than who I have always been.
’I am Meghan and I married this incredible man. This to me is just part of our love story.'

Harry voiced his desire to leave the UK and revealed he is considering living in Africa one day.
He said: 'I don't know where we could live in Africa at the moment.
'We've just come from Cape Town, that would be an amazing place for us to be able to to base ourselves, of course it would.
'But with all the problems that are going on there I just don't see how we would be able to really make as much difference as we'd want to.'
Harry also revealed Africa will be the main focus of his and Meghan's work in the future.
He said: 'The rest of our lives, especially our life's work will be predominantly focused on Africa, on conservation.
'There are 19 commonwealth countries across this continent, there's a lot of things to be done, there's a lot of problems here but there's also huge potential for solutions.

Harry described the way he deals with the pressures of his life as being a matter of 'constant management', adding: 'I thought I was out of the woods and then suddenly it all came back, and this is something that I have to manage.
'Part of this job, and part of any job, like everybody, is putting on a brave face and turning a cheek to a lot of the stuff, but again, for me and again for my wife, of course there is a lot of stuff that hurts, especially when the majority of it is untrue.
'But all we need to do is focus on being real, and focus on being the people that we are, and standing up for what we believe in.
'I will not be bullied into playing a game that killed my mum.'

In the documentary, Harry said that he felt significant pressure being a member of the royal family in the spotlight, and was particularly stressed by the memories of his mother's relationship with the press.
He was asked: 'Do you feel at peace in a way yet or is it still a sort of wound that festers?'
To which he replied said: 'I think probably a wound that festers. I think being part of this family, in this role, in this job, every single time I see a camera, every single time I hear a click, every single time I see a flash it takes me straight back, so in that respect it's the worst reminder of her life as opposed to the best.
'My mum taught me a certain set of values that I will always try to uphold, despite the role and the job that sometimes that entails.
'I will always protect my family and now I have a family to protect.
'So everything that she went through, and what happened to her, is incredibly important every single day, and that is not me being paranoid, that is just me not wanting a repeat of the past.
'If anybody else knew what I knew, be it a father or be it a husband, be it anyone, you would probably be doing exactly what I am doing as well.
'Everything that she went through and what happened to her is still incredibly raw every single day. That is not me being paranoid, that is me not wanting a repeat of the past.'

ウィリアム王子との関係について

'Part of this role, part of this job and this family being under the pressure it is under, inevitably stuff happens.
'But look, we are brothers, we will always be brothers. We are certainly on different paths at the moment but I will always be there for him and, as I know, he will always be there for me.'
He added: 'We don't see as much as we used to because we are so busy but I love him dearly and the majority of stuff is created out of nothing.
'As brothers, you have good days, you have bad days.'
