”Finding Freedom”

”The Times”

Mr Scobie and Miss Durand say they have spoken to more than 100 sources, including ‘close friends of Harry and Meghan, royal aides and palace staff (past and present)’.
A spokesman said the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not contribute to the book. Meghan has been said in the past to permit friends to speak to the press on her behalf.

Queen DID slap down Meghan Markle over her choice of wedding day tiara but duchess blames Her Majesty's dresser Angela Kelly for the bust-up, book reveals

However the authors of Finding Freedom, Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, claim Harry felt the Queen's dresser Angela Kelly had deliberately dragged her feet while trying to help decide on what tiara to wear, The Sun reports

Meghan wanted to wear an emerald tiara, but the Queen had instead selected a diamond tiara worn by her grandmother, Queen Mary, in 1932.
Harry felt the Queen's dresser Angela Kelly had deliberately dragged her feet while trying to help decide on what tiara to wear

'Meghan cannot have whatever she wants. She gets what tiara she's given by me.'
'The Queen also questioned why Meghan needed a veil for the wedding, given it was to be her second marriage', the source alleged, adding that: 'Meghan can be difficult'.
He allegedly told staff with a raised voice: 'What Meghan wants, Meghan gets' and when reports of his 'tiresome behaviour' reached the Queen who asked to see her grandson privately and she 'put him firmly in his place', Mr Jobson wrote.
In 2018 Meghan said the Queen Mary Diamond Bandeau was the 'perfect' choice for her wedding, describing how she wanted her bridal look to be 'incredibly timeless' yet 'still modern'.
Speaking for an exhibition where the tiara was being displayed at the time, she said: 'When it came to the tiara on the day, I was very fortunate to be able to choose this gorgeous art deco style bandeau tiara.
'Harry and I had gone to Buckingham Palace to meet with Her Majesty The Queen to select one of the options that were there, which was an incredibly surreal day as you can imagine.
'And that was the one that, I think, as we tried them on, stood out.'
Speaking about the tiara she eventually chose, she continued: 'I think it was just perfect because it was so clean and simple - and also to that point, an extension of what Clare and I had been trying to do with the dress which was have something that could be so incredibly timeless but still feel modern.'

royal expert Katie Nicholl said Harry feeling like a third wheel is a 'recurring theme' of the book.

She said that while the media love the idea of Prince Harry, Prince William and Kate Middleton being a fanastic team, Harry felt like 'a spare wheel'.
'At points [in time], I even heard him complaining that he felt like the gooseberry, the third one along at the date. He never quite fitted in,' she added.
Katie, who works as a royal editor for Vanity Fair, added that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, both 38,  went out of their way to make sure Harry felt 'part of the team' but he 'always wanted to be his own person'.
'I think Meghan has very much been the catalyst in giving him that confidence to break free from William and Kate, and to break free from that trio dynamic, which was at times cozy and convenient, but actually wasn't really what he wanted.'
The expert added that Meghan was 'very much a driving force' and that 'people don't give her enough credit' for giving him confidence.

the two royal women had a strained relationship from the start.
They say it wasn't a falling out as such, more that they were never close as they were very different.

Harry introduced his then girlfriend Meghan to his brother and Kate at Kensington Palace a few months into their relationship.

However the book says that Kate is an "extremely guarded person" who keeps a very tight group of friends.

But Kate's daughter Charlotte helped to ease the tension between the women due to Meghan's "adoration" of the little Princess.

During the early days of their relationship, Meghan lived with Harry at his Kensington Palace home Nottingham Cottage.

The small two-bed was just around the corner from the Cambridges, which meant they were extremely close and spent a lot of time with Charlotte and her brothers George and Louis.

Meghan also bought her sister-in-law a soft leather Smythson notebook which brought them together.

1. HARRY AND MEGHAN WERE SECRETLY ENGAGED THREE MONTHS BEFORE THEY WENT PUBLIC: According to Finding Freedom, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex 'became secretly engaged in August 2017'. That same month, the pair took a trip to Botswana where they are said to have celebrated both Meghan's 36th birthday and their first year as a couple. In the biography, a source says Prince William tried to 'make sure that Harry wasn't blindsided by lust' in his relationship with Meghan shortly before they got engaged that August. Harry took offence when William told him: 'Take as much time as you need to get to know this girl.' Harry is said to have considered the choice of the words 'this girl' to be condescending.

2. HARRY DITCHED AN OLD FRIEND FOR 'CRITICIZING MEGAN': Scobie and Durand wrote: ¿Harry, sensitive to even the slightest hint of prejudice, had fallouts within his own circle.¿ Questions about the new relationship left him wondering: ¿Is this about race? Is it snobbery?¿ Matters came to a head with an old male friend of the prince who ¿spent an afternoon gossiping about Meghan¿. The writers say: ¿Word got back to Harry and the prince immediately cut him off.' The book offers no clue to the identity of the friend. It has previously been reported that the duke¿s friendship with several members of his former inner circle cooled or ended altogether after he met Meghan.

3. THE COUPLE FELL FOR EACH OTHER ALMOST IMMEDIATELY: Finding Freedom claims Harry and Meghan felt a 'palpable attraction' after their first date at Dean Street Townhouse in Soho, London. Harry reportedly left in a 'trance' and Meghan told friends 'this could have legs'. Harry had a beer, while Meghan drank a martini as they discussed their work, so engrossed with each other that their nibbles lay neglected. That first date lasted three hours, and their next meeting was the very next night, at the same venue, the book claims. Harry said 'I love you' to Meghan just three months into their courtship, and Meghan quickly responded with 'I love you, too'

4. HARRY AND MEGHAN FELT SNUBBED BY THE QUEEN: The couple were perturbed when the Queen broadcasted to the nation alongside family snaps but without their picture on her desk, Finding Freedom claims. Already feeling they ¿had long been sidelined by the institution and were not a fundamental part of its future¿, the couple considered the episode to be ¿yet another sign that they needed to consider their own path¿, according to the book¿s authors. Photographs of the Duke and Duchess had featured in the Queen¿s address in 2018, but she opted last year to display only images of her father King George VI, Prince Charles and Camilla and a family shot of the Cambridges. The book quotes Palace sources as saying they wanted to illustrate the line of succession.

Prince Harry felt Prince Charles (pictured with Prince William) valued his own public image above their father-son relationship, a bombshell biography detailing the Sussexes' dramatic departure from royal life has revealed
5. HARRY'S FRUSTRATIONS WITH HIS PLACE IN THE ROYAL FAMILY: Prince Harry felt Prince Charles valued his own public image above their father-son relationship, Finding Freedom claims. The biography also revealed Harry had 'grown frustrated' that he and Meghan 'often took a back seat to other family members,' including his father and brother. 'While they both respected the hierarchy of the institution, it was difficult when they wanted to focus on a project and were told that a more senior ranking family member, be it Prince William or Prince Charles, had an initiative or tour being announced at the same time — so they would just have to wait,' the book claims.
6. HARRY GAVE HIS FATHER JUST 20 MINUTES NOTICE BEFORE GOING PUBLIC WITH MEGHAN: Prince Charles was left ¿crushed¿ when Harry confirmed Meghan Markle was his girlfriend ¿ as it overshadowed an official tour of the Middle East, Finding Freedom claims. ¿When Harry decided to make an official statement, the only stumbling block was Prince Charles. On a diplomatic tour in the Middle East, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall had just arrived in Bahrain to meet the country¿s King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa... A statement from Kensington Palace condemning the Press and, in the same breath, confirming Harry¿s new girlfriend would all but eliminate coverage of Prince Charles¿s tour of the Gulf.¿ The biography of the Sussexes goes on: ¿The Palace decided to go ahead with the statement nonetheless, much of which was drafted by Harry himself. Sure enough, as soon as Harry put out his declaration, the statement dominated the news cycle.

7. KATE SENT FLOWERS TO MEGHAN AS A 'PEACE OFFERING': Finding Freedom alleges that the Duchess of Cambridge and Duchess of Sussex, both 38, never became friends - with Meghan 'disappointed' Kate never reached out to her or visited. According to the book, the two 'struggled to move past distance politeness' and had 'nothing in common other than the fact that they lived at Kensington Palace'. Vanity Fair's Katie Nicholl has revealed how Kate did send flowers 'at one point' to 'rectify the situation', but the Duchess of Sussex was nonplussed, with the royal author writing: 'Meghan told Kate in no uncertain terms that flowers were not enough.'

Harry used the username SpikeyMau5, inspired by Canadian DJ Deadmau5, before freezing the account after his relationship with the former Suits star emerged in October 2016. 9. MEGHAN ALLEGEDLY SET UP PHOTO OPPS WITH PAPARAZZI: Before Harry and Meghan became an item, the Suits star allegedly told photographers where she would be so they could get pictures and ‘let info slip out to the press’, the bombshell biography claims. There is no suggestion that Meghan was involved in the pair’s relationship becoming public. The book states: ‘The following day [after the pair become public] Meghan felt somewhat bittersweet. On the one hand, she was disappointed that their secret was out. It was no longer just the two of them. While Meghan, before she met Harry, had occasionally set up a paparazzi photo here and there or let info slip out to the press, she did everything in her power to protect the privacy of her relationship with the prince. She knew keeping things quiet meant they could get to know each other without pressure or further worries that came from reporters covering their romance.’

Finding Freedom: The bombshell revelations from Harry and Meghan's biography

Harry and William fell out, when Duke of Sussex branded older brother a 'snob'
Prince Harry took offence when his 'snobby' brother cautioned him not to rush into marrying Meghan Markle.
Harry took offence when William told him: 'Take as much time as you need to get to know this girl.'
Harry is said to have considered the choice of the words 'this girl' to be condescending.
'In those last two words, 'this girl', Harry heard the tone of snobbishness that was anathema to his approach to the world,' claims the book. 'During his ten-year career in the military, outside the Royal bubble, he had learnt not to make snap judgments about people based on their accent, education, ethnicity, class or profession.'

Meghan was disappointed Kate never reached out
Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle never became friends - while the Duchess of Sussex was 'disappointed' she never reached out to her or visited.
The Duchesses 'struggled to move past distance politeness' and had 'nothing in common other than the fact that they lived at Kensington Palace', according to the authors of Finding Freedom.
In one particularly awkward encounter when Meghan was dating Harry, Kate went alone in her Range Rover on a shopping trip - despite the fact Meghan was also going to the same street.
The lack of any friendship between the pair was confirmed in 2018 when the Sussexes announced they wanted to base their family at Windsor.
Despite this frostiness, Meghan felt hurt at newspaper stories of the 'duelling duchesses' and was angry at the failure of the palace press office to correct them.

Courtiers branded Meghan Markle a 'showgirl with lots of baggage' and said 'there's something about her I don't trust'
A courtier in the Royal Household has said 'there is something I don't trust' about Meghan Markle, the book claims.
The book, Finding Freedom, claims as soon as Meghan was introduced to members of the Royal Household, tensions emerged.
One source claimed: 'She comes with a lot of baggage.' Another suggested: There's just something about her I don't trust.'
Another described Meghan as 'Harry's showgirl
Harry was convinced he was going to marry Meghan after the second date
The biography describes in detail the couple's first date in Soho, London, which went so well that Meghan later confided in a friend: 'Do I sound crazy when I say this could have legs?'.
Before arriving in the capital she had also told a confidant that she'd be happy for 'a nice English gentleman to flirt with' while promoting Suits in Britain.
During that first date at London's Dean Street Townhouse the couple spent three hours in conversation, Harry drinking beer and Meghan sipping martinis. Harry was said to be 'in a trance' and had told himself: 'I've got to up my game here' when trying to impress the LA-born actress.
The book says: 'Meghan had enough dating experience to know a charmer when she saw one, and Harry was obviously not at all that' - adding the couple were 'immediately obsessed' with each other and bonded over their joint 'passions for wanting to make change for good'.

According to one friend quoted in the book, Harry and Meghan 'chatted a lot' but the evening, like the night before, ended chastely, with Harry returning to Kensington Palace despite their 'electric chemistry'.
Describing how they flirted throughout, the authors said: 'A touch of an arm here, direct eye contact there.'
The pair had now met just twice but Harry already knew 'they would be together at that point', a friend said, adding of Meghan: 'She was ticking every box fast.' Meghan, who was in London visiting, documented much of her trip on social media.
The night out was so successful the second date the following night at the same venue where they are said to have sneaked in via a side door, hidden from view by a delivery truck bringing in produce and fresh fish from Billingsgate Market.

The pair had now met just twice but Harry already knew ‘they would be together at that point’, a friend said, adding of Meghan: ‘She was ticking every box fast.’ Meghan, who was in London visiting, documented much of her trip on social media.
Harry was the first to say 'I love you'
Prince Harry was the first to say 'I love you' in his relationship with Meghan Markle, with friends revealing the couple were 'immediately obsessed' with each other.
Meghan's necklace controversy
Meghan Markle was left 'frustrated and emotional' after a palace aide 'scolded' her for wearing a necklace with the initials H and M before she and Prince Harry were engaged, according to Finding Freedom.
The former Suits star, 38, was spotted wearing the personalised £184 14 karat gold chain by Los Angeles-based designer Maya Brenner - believed to have been a gift from the prince - while out shopping in Toronto in December 2016.
The bold move was seen as an early indication of the seriousness of their relationship - a month after the news of their love affair emerged. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex later announced their engagement in November 2017.

According to a source close to the couple, following the publication of the images Meghan received a dressing down from a palace aide.
'She was advised that wearing such a necklace only served to encourage the photographers to keep pursuing such images — and new headlines,' they said.
Prince Harry was REFUSED Queen's offer of a trial period' that would have allowed him and Meghan Markle to return to the fold 12 months after Megxit
Prince Harry was so keen on quitting the royal family that he initially refused the offer of a trial period which could have seen him and Meghan return to the UK after Megxit,
The review was insisted upon by courtiers and other royals, with the Queen keen to let Harry know he could return to the fold if he changed his mind.
However, the Duke of Sussex was keen to make a 'clean break' and had to be persuaded to agree to the trial period.  A source said: 'He was adamantly opposed to the review process.'
Harry is thought to have been against the idea because it came from 'the institution' and he feared that a review would lessen the impact of their departure, allowing the media to write they could return.

Harry believed the 'old guard' at Buckingham Palace disliked Meghan and wanted to make her life difficult.
That belief is thought to have fuelled his desire to not include a review option in Megxit.
Harry 'ditched an old friend for criticising Meghan'
The Duke of Sussex was so 'incandescent' with rage at the racist abuse Meghan Markle received after their relationship went public that he ditched an old friend for gossiping about her.
Harry was shocked at the reception given to his new girlfriend by his social circle and the wider public, according to Finding Freedom.
He was especially concerned about ‘the ugliness of racism...both unconscious and intentional’.
Charles didn't know about Harry's press statement
Before they were engaged, Harry gave a bombshell statement from Kensington Palace condemning the press while confirming Harry's new girlfriend.
But it's release coincided with Prince Charles' tour in the Middle East, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall having arrived in Bahrain to meet the country's King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa.
The palace decided to go ahead with the statement, much of it drafted by Harry himself.

His father only learnt of the statement 20 minutes before it was released and, unsurprisingly, it soon dominated the news cycle.
Prince Charles and his team were left crushed and disappointed, though Charles also understood the intervention was a necessary one.
However, the episode only served to prove that Harry felt the need to prioritise the woman he loved over duty to the royal family.
Harry had a  secret Instagram account
Harry used the username SpikeyMau5, inspired by Canadian DJ Deadmau5, before freezing the account after his relationship with the former Suits star emerged in October 2016.
The private Instagram profile had a mouse-shaped helmet for a picture - but piqued attention from Meghan's legions of fans when she became just one of two people following it four years ago just after the couple had a blind date at Dean Street Townhouse in Soho.
The 'Spikey' element of its name came from the code word used by Scotland Yard officers guarding the Duke of Sussex 24/7.
Harry and Meghan's £1500 a night camping trip
Six weeks after their first date, Harry took Meghan to Botswana where the pair stayed in £1,500-a-night tents.
A friend is quoted as saying: ‘She came back smiling and just completely spellbound.’ Meghan’s phone was also said to be full of photos, including selfies of her and Harry.
‘I’ve never felt that safe that close to someone in such a short amount of time,’ she reportedly told a friend.
They continued their relationship in secret with Harry flying out to Canada to spend time with her.
But the authors said that ever since the couple’s trip to Africa, ‘their romance had been on a fast track’.
‘Technically the getaway was just their third date but by then, they were each already dancing around the idea that this just may be a for ever thing,’ a friend said.
The biography also claims: -
  • Meghan used to tip off the paparazzi when working as an actress in Canada, despite her later going on to claim she didn't understand the 'tabloid culture'.
  • Meghan's friends claimed she endured prejudice from the royal household, with a senior staff member overheard telling a colleague: 'There's just something about her I just don't trust.'
  • Harry felt 'unprotected' by his family and disparaged within palace walls for being 'too sensitive and outspoken'.
  • Senior courtiers in other households felt that the global popularity of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex 'needed to be reined in',
  • A tearful Meghan told friends about their decision to quit royal duties: 'I gave up my entire life for this family.'

Prince William and Kate and Prince Harry and Meghan: A 'royal rift'

May 2018
Rumours have long swirled of a row between the Duchess of Cambridge and Meghan Markle at the former actress' wedding to Prince Harry two years ago, in May 2018.
Then last month, society bible Tatler claimed the spat centred on whether Princess Charlotte and the other young bridesmaids should wear tights.
In a profile of Kate, 38, titled Catherine the Great, it quotes one unnamed friend who claims she wanted to follow 'protocol', with the bridesmaids, including Charlotte, then three, wearing tights – but Meghan disagreed.
Pictures from the wedding at St George's Chapel, Windsor, appear to show the six bridesmaids with bare legs, while photographs from Prince William and Kate's wedding in April 2011 show bridesmaids wearing tights.
However, Kensington Palace distanced itself from the lengthy article and said: 'This story contains a swathe of inaccuracies and false misrepresentations which were not put to Kensington Palace prior to publication.'
November 2018
Royal reporter Katie Nicholl claimed sources close to the brothers said they had a falling out around Christmas 2017, when Harry reportedly told William he wasn't making enough of an effort to include Meghan in The Firm.
'Harry felt William wasn’t rolling out the red carpet for Meghan and told him so,' her source claimed. 'They had a bit of a fall-out, which was only resolved when Charles stepped in and asked William to make an effort.
'That’s when the Cambridges invited the Sussexes to spend Christmas with them.'
February 2019
In a TLC documentary - Kate v. Meghan: Princesses at War, Katie Nicholl said Harry had taken offence to a comment William made about his relationship with Meghan.
'William was quite concerned that the relationship had moved so quickly,' she said. 'And being close to Harry, probably the only person close enough to say to Harry, "This seems to be moving quickly, are you sure?"
'I think what was meant as well-intended brotherly advice just riled Harry. Harry is hugely protective of Meghan. He saw that as criticism. He interpreted that as his brother not really being behind this marriage, this union, and I don’t think things have been quite right ever since.'
In the same documentary, royal correspondent Emily Andrews claimed Harry 'went ballistic' and accused William of 'trying to wreck this relationship before it’s even started'.
March 2019
Royal filmmaker Nick Bullen told Fox News that there was never a feud between Kate and Meghan - instead, 'William and Harry have had a rift'.
'All brothers fall out. All families fall out. Their fall-out at the moment is becoming public,' he said.
April 2019
Prince Harry attended an Easter service at St George's Chapel - which happened to fall on the Queen's birthday. He arrived alone alongside Peter Philips and his then wife Autumn.
While he was seen chatting to his cousin Zara Tindall and Kate, he didn't appear to speak to William.
May 2019
Following the Easter service, Kate allegedly advised Harry to offer William 'an olive branch' to repair their fractured relationship and the 'complete and utter breakdown of communication' between them, The Mirror reported.
It was her suggestion that led the Sussexes to invite the Cambridges to Frogmore Cottage, where they had tea and chatted for half an hour.
June 2019
Meghan and Harry officially split from The Royal Foundation - the joint charity they shared with William and Kate.
An official statement read: 'The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex has today announced the conclusions of a review into its structure, and how it will best support Their Royal Highnesses with future charitable activity.
'Later this year, The Royal Foundation will become the principal charitable and philanthropic vehicle for The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will establish their own new charitable foundation with transitional operating support from The Royal Foundation. In addition, both couples will continue to work together on projects in the future, including on The Foundation's mental health program, Heads Together.'
July 2019
Prince William and Kate attended Archie's Christening and posed for a group photo. However, a source told Us Weekly that the Cambridges 'weren't happy' about the Sussexes' decision to keep the celebration private.
They reportedly said: 'William thinks his brother is going overboard keeping Archie out of the spotlight' and 'blames Meghan'.
But in the same month, it appeared that Meghan and Kate were today determined to put feud rumours to bed with a truce at the tennis.
The pair seemed to be getting on famously as they chatted and smiled in the Royal Box, after taking their seats to watch Meghan's good friend Serena Williams at Wimbledon.
October 2019
In an ITV documentary, Prince Harry refused to deny there was a rift between him and his brother.
Speaking to Tom Bradby in Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, Harry said: 'Part of this role and part of this job, and this family, being under the pressure that it’s under, inevitably, you know, stuff happens.
'But look, we’re brothers, we’ll always be brothers. And we’re certainly on different paths at the moment, but I’ll always be there for him, as I know he’ll always be there for me.'
He added: 'We don’t see each other as much as we used to because we’re so busy, but you know, I love him dearly. The majority of this stuff [in the press] is created out of nothing, but you know, as brothers, you know, you have good days, you have bad days.'
November 2019
The Sussexes announced they would be spending Christmas with Meghan's mother Doria Ragland, rather than at Sandringham with the Queen. While the decision was said to have the monarch's support, one source told Us Weekly that the 'rift' between William and Harry was 'one of the main reasons behind their decision'.
Meanwhile a source told People: 'William is the future king. There is going to be some competitiveness between him and Harry... That already puts a rock in the relationship.'
January 2020
Tom Bradby told Good Morning Britain that the brothers are hoping to rebuild their relationship. He said: 'There are lots of people who would love there to be, including, I think, the brothers themselves, love them to be closer again. And with any luck, that will happen. But with families, we all know stuff happens, things are said.'
But later that month, Harry and Meghan announced they were quitting as senior members of the Royal Family, which 'blindsided' William, according to an Us Weekly source.
However, a royal source told The Sun that, following the official Sandringham summit, William and Harry 'spent time together privately' to 'work on their relationship and discuss their future'.
'It has been groundbreaking in terms of saving their bond as brothers and has been totally driven by them,' the source added.
'But Kate and Meghan, who was in Canada, did join in with some of the talks on more than one occasion - which is another sign of a real thaw in their relationship. Things are better.'
March 2020
The Commonwealth Day service - Meghan and Harry's final official engagement - was 'not exactly the warm reunion we were hoping for', according to body language expert Judi James.
She said Harry's 'tension was palpable' as William seemingly failed to greet his brother.
Towards the end of the month, when the coronavirus pandemic took hold, Dailymail.com reported that Meghan had confided in friends that her husband felt 'helpless' and was 'concerned' about the Queen and his father Prince Charles catching coronavirus.
The friend added: 'Meghan told her inner circle of friends that Harry has been communicating with Prince William and the Queen on a pretty consistent basis.
'She said this world crisis has actually brought them all closer together, especially Harry and his brother.
'Harry has made it very clear to them that he will do whatever he can to help from Canada. Meghan said they are grateful, especially Harry, that they could spend time with his family before all this insanity began.'

The defence document also reveals that the publisher will rely on evidence from Mr Markle, meaning that should the case go to trial both Meghan and her father may have to testify against one another.
– January 19: The Duke of Sussex describes the media as a “powerful force” during a speech at a private event for his charity Sentebale in which he referred to the impact of overwhelming media intrusion on the daily life of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales, who was killed in a crash after her car, driven at speed by a drunk chauffeur, was chased through the streets of Paris by the paparazzi.

– April 20: Details of calls and texts by the duke and duchess to Mr Markle in the days before their May 2018 wedding are revealed in court documents. In their reply to the Mail on Sunday’s defence, the duchess’s lawyers say she first discovered her father was in hospital through his statement to US website TMZ.
On the same day, the duke and duchess announced they have severed all dealings with Britain’s tabloid press, writing in a strongly worded letter to the editors of The Sun, Daily Mirror, Daily Mail and Daily Express that they will not “offer themselves up as currency for an economy of clickbait and distortion”.
– April 24: First High Court hearing in Meghan’s legal action against Associated Newspapers. Mr Justice Warby hears an application by the publisher to strike out parts of Meghan’s claim. The duke and duchess are understood to listen in to the part of the hearing conducted by her lawyers. The case is heard remotely as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
– May 1: Associated Newspapers wins the first High Court skirmish in the legal action. In a ruling, Mr Justice Warby strikes out parts of Meghan’s claim against the publisher, including allegations that it acted “dishonestly” by leaving out certain passages of the letter. The judge also struck out allegations that the publisher deliberately “stirred up” issues between Meghan and her father, and that it had an “agenda” of publishing intrusive or offensive stories about her.
The judge said those allegations should not form part of her case at this stage, because they were “irrelevant” to her claim for misuse of private information, copyright infringement and breach of the Data Protection Act. But he also said those parts of her case may be revived at a later stage, if they are put on a proper legal basis.
– July 1: Meghan applies to the High Court to stop Associated Newspapers from naming her five friends who spoke anonymously to People, a US magazine, to defend her from tabloid “bullying”.
– July 29: Meghan’s claim returns to the High Court for another preliminary hearing. Mr Justice Warby hears two matters – one on costs and an application to prevent Associated Newspapers from disclosing the names of the five people who spoke anonymously to People magazine.
