昨年、
サセックス公爵ご夫妻とともに
ケンブリッジ公爵ご夫妻が
立ち上げられた
メンタルヘルスの、24時間テキストサービス
”SHOUT”
の1周年を記念し
ボランティアの人たちと
ビデオチャット
これは元々、アメリカで成功した取り組み
”Crisis Text Line”
からヒントを得て
300万ポンドを出資し
英国へ取り入れられたもの。
今思えば、貴重な
ファブ４のジョイントワークだった。
コロナ禍における今、
多くのチャリティも閉鎖を余儀なくされている中
この、24時間体制のSNSでのヘルプラインは
ライフラインとすらなっている模様。
ご夫妻は
5人のボランティアたちから
この一年の経験についてや
また、このパンデミックの中
どのように彼らの仕事が変わったのかについて
お聞きに。
The couple spoke about how Shout is playing a vital role as the country continues to deal with the impact of coronavirus and how work on the frontline is affecting health and care staff as well as emergency responders and other key workers.
The volunteers also spoke about how lockdown has impacted young people’s mental wellbeing, including how many are finding it harder to access their usual ways of maintaining good mental health but the difference a supportive text conversation can make.
The service is powered by a team of more than 1,800 trained volunteers who stand ready to speak to anyone at all times of the day and is free on all major mobile networks.
In the past year, it has had 300,000 text conversations, two thirds of which have been with people aged 25 or under.

During the call, The Duke thanked the five volunteers on the call for their work, saying:
'You guys are the trailblazers, you have been doing a fantastic job keeping Shout moving forward, so well done and thank you for all your hard work; we really appreciate it.'

"Have the calls changed in any way since lockdown? Has there been a shift or has it just been an increase in numbers?"
One volunteer discussed the effect of the "pause in life" and difficulties dealing with strained relationships, especially in abusive situations. Another volunteer revealed healthcare staff have been in touch, expressing worry and anxiety about the lack of PPE and not seeing their families.
William asked:
"Has it changed the way you think about volunteering? Has it changed your views on mental health in any way?" Kate added: "What sort of things help? Is it reassurance? Is it purely having these conversations?"
The couple heard about the importance of being heard, especially for those in isolated living situations. William touched on the stigma which still exists and asked if volunteers feel enough people are being reached.

Shout was launched in May by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as part of their Royal Foundation.
The idea behind the initiative is to provide immediate support via text to anyone struggling with mental health issues. According to a report, since its launch the charity has had around six million text messages with people in need of support.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended Shout’s Crisis Volunteer celebration event at the Troubadour White City Theatre in London. The event brought together people from across the UK who volunteer with Shout to support people in crisis. The event enabled volunteers, who work from computers in their own homes, to see the scale of the national network they have joined
Shout, a 24/7 text support service, was researched and developed by The Royal Foundation as a legacy of the Heads Together Campaign. It was launched by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex in May 2019. The news comes after Prince Harry and Meghan spoke with mental health workers for the US alternative of the charity, which is called the Crisis Text Line.
Ricky Neal, who works for Crisis Text Line in Atlanta, took to social media on Thursday to share a photo of a staff Zoom call where the duke and duchess were royal guests.
'It's not everyday that Meghan and Harry jump into your staff meeting & champion the work you do! Blessed to still be working during these crazy times!' he said in an Instagram post.
