BBC Tiny Happy People

endorsed the national launch of Tiny Happy People — a BBC Education initiative designed to provide resources and support to parents and carers of children up to the age of four.

Recognising the significance of the project to supporting parents as they guide their children through the earliest years of life, The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will collaborate with the BBC 🤝 as they continue to develop and roll out @bbctinyhappypeople.

Tiny Happy People resources are easy to build into a daily routine and proven to deliver great results for parents and their young children

  • Duchess of Cambridge met families involved in creation of Tiny Happy People
  • Royal Foundation to collaborate with BBC on long-term roll out of the initiative
  • Kate, 38, joked her three children are 'bottomless pits' who constantly need fed
  • Added Louis doesn't understand social distancing and wants to cuddle others
Kate was on hand to speak to families and BBC Breakfast's Louise Minchin about the BBC's Tiny Happy People initiative, which provides free resources to parents and is supported by the Royal Foundation.

"In the first few months, there's a huge amount of support from midwives and health visitors.
But from then onwards, there's a massive gap before they then start school.
Hearing some of the things from the parents today, Ryan at the beginning, saying how his baby has got five different cries.
He's learnt a huge amount from Tiny Happy People and it's information like that I wish I had had as a first-time mum, but, for so many parents, it's gold dust really for families to be given those tips and tools to be able to use, particularly in these first five years."

”Louis doesn't understand social distancing, he goes out wanting to cuddle everything, particularly any babies younger than him.”

'If you put Louis down, he's off'.

”My children have bottomless pits. I feel like a constant feeding machine for them”

In a statement Kate said:
"Families and carers are at the heart of nurturing the next generation of happy, healthy adults, but sometimes it can be hard to know where to turn to for advice. Tiny Happy People is an invaluable resource which provides parents and carers with support and tips, as well as simple activities to ensure children develop the language skills they need to have the best possible start in life."

The Duchess of Cambridge: "Early years is a precious time to nurture young minds and help children’s futures"

HRH The Duchess of Cambridge has been involved in the creative development of Tiny Happy People, the BBC's early years language and communication initiative, fuelled by her passion for giving children the best start in life.
She talked exclusively to the BBC about her commitment to early years development and the crucial role Tiny Happy People can play in supporting parents...

Supporting parents is vital

“In the first few months as new parents there’s a huge amount of support from midwives and health visitors. But from then, there’s a massive gap before children start school, and it’s that time that I think parents really need the support.
“What I definitely hear a lot is that that there is this sense of being judged. Parents don’t feel that they can reach out for help, which is really sad, because we all need support."

The role of Tiny Happy People

“Tiny Happy People really is gold dust for families, giving tips and tools to use particularly in those first five years.
“Families and parents know how important it is to look after our children and to nurture and care for them. But I didn’t realise before I started all of this work just how important it is. Some of the science behind child development it is extraordinary. For example, that 90% of our adult brain grows before the age of 5.
“It just shows what a precious time this is and what an amazing opportunity we’ve got to really nurture their minds and put them in the best possible position for their future lives.
There’s not a huge amount of support and guidance currently out there. I think what Tiny Happy People is providing for families is a real lifeline and very much needed.”

'So much focus, particularly during pregnancy and when you have a newborn baby, is the physical development. But what I found was missing was the support on how to further their emotional and mental development... And it's that bit that I think you really need the support.'

'It's been challenging. Some parts have been really positive, spending extra time with the kids, everything like that, but it is equally stressful. You are in confined spaces... And having to home school, that was a challenge. I always had a respect for teachers before, but now I have a newfound respect for them.

She added she is now faced with the challenge of balancing a return to work with wanting to spend more time together as a family.

'How do you extend that umbilical cord from having had that precious time together? I know from a personal perspective, having all that extra time together as a family, but then being able to step back again and go back to how things were. It's really hard for lots of families.'

'Families and carers are at the heart of nurturing the next generation of happy, healthy adults, but sometimes it can be hard to know where to turn to for advice.

'Tiny Happy People is an invaluable resource which provides parents and carers with support and tips, as well as simple activities to ensure children develop the language skills they need to have the best possible start in life.

'I am delighted to have been part of its journey and hope families across the UK will enjoy exploring the resources.'

To mark the launch, last week The Duchess met three families who have been involved in the creation and piloting of Tiny Happy People

@ Sandringham last week

met with families who worked on the project, keeping a safe distance

The Duchess has been involved with the project for a number of months, having visited the Tiny Happy People team at Broadcasting House in London last November to take part in a creative workshop, during which she worked with the team on some of the video resources and social media content.

Kate even contributed to two cartoon films - one on the ‘science of singing to bump’ while pregnant, and another on how eye contact is key to a baby’s language learning.

The BBC said the duchess helped with the character and background development for the two animations.

The Queen recently spoke to service personnel from the British Army, the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force via video call, to hear about the work of the British Armed Forces at home and overseas, during the current pandemic.

As Head of the Armed Forces, Her Majesty is regularly updated on operations around the world.

Chief of Defence Staff General Sir Nicholas Carter joined the video call, along with:

Able Rate Sophie Levy who serves as an Aircraft Handler, on her first operational deployment on board RFA Argus which is in the Caribbean.

Lieutenant Colonel Barrie Terry who is currently deployed on a UN peacekeeping mission in Mali, and has been apart from his family since last year due to travel restrictions.

Missed this part of end:

Lance Corporal Shanwayne Stephens who serves in The Queen’s Colour Squadron and has represented the RAF at many state events including State Openings of Parliament and the annual Festival of Remembrance.

《Lance Corporal Shanwayne Stephens》
from the Queen's Colour Squadron in the RAF told her how he represents Jamaica in the nation's bobsleigh team.

The Queen replied, "Gosh!" and then laughed before saying, "it sounds a very dangerous job."
"So how do you train?" she asked.

Lance Corporal Stephens, who is the bobsledding team's pilot, replied: "During the lockdown... we have had to resort to unorthodox training methods. I've been pushing a car up and down the street!"

The Queen let out another laugh and said: "Well, I suppose that's one way to train."
"It's bad luck that everything has been cancelled too, for such a long time,"
she told him.
The Lance Corporal hopes to compete in the Winter Olympics in 2022.

The Queen also spoke to 《Lieutenant Colonel Barrie Terry》 who is in Bamako in Mali, where he had been stationed since November - missing his family during Christmas, Easter and the summer.

Her Majesty heard how Col Terry's wife, who trains nurses returning to the NHS, had been "abandoned" with their two children.

Able Rate Sophie Levy spoke to the Queen from her ship, the RFA Argus, which is sailing in Curacao in the Caribbean.

The connection to the ship was "very good" the Queen noted.

The Queen was reminded that the Royal Navy will have two ships in the region for the hurricane season.

She said she was "afraid" that the "hurricane season is about to come upon us".

The Queen ended the video call by saying:
"I must say, it's very interesting to hear about all the deployments and obviously everybody has been extremely busy with the pandemic haven't they? And doing a wonderful job."
"I am very glad to have been able to meet all of you and the best of luck"

Meghan Markle's speech extracts

'It’s such a joy to speak to you today. To young women around the world who aren’t just poised to change the world; but have already begun changing the world. Last month I had the chance to speak to the 2020 class at my high school alma mater, which is an all-girls school in Los Angeles. I said that they shouldn’t see their graduation as an ending, but rather the beginning. The beginning of a journey where they can now harness their work, their values, and skills – all the skills they’ve learned – to rebuild the world around them.'
'I say to you, keep challenging, keep pushing, make them a little uncomfortable. Because it’s only in that discomfort that we actually create the conditions to reimagine our standards, our policies, and our leadership; to move towards real representation and meaningful influence over the structures of decision-making and power.'
'Despite what some might say, this reimagining is not a zero-sum game, where one side wins and the other side loses. Not at all. It is mutually beneficial and better for everyone.'
'Your generation is often referred to as the digital natives, and you understand that our online world has the power to affirm and support as much as it does to harm. But we are not meant to be breaking each other down; we are meant to be building each other up. So use your voice both on-and-offline to do just that—build each other up, support each other.
'There will always be negative voices and sometimes those voices can appear to be outsized, and sometimes they can appear to be painfully loud. You can and will use your own voices to drown out the noise. Because that’s what it is—just noise. But your voices are those of truth. And hope. And your voices can and should be much louder.'
'Believing in true equality is not enough — it’s going to take more than belief, we have to work for it every day; even when it's hard, even when it makes others feel uneasy. We have to speak up for ourselves and we have to speak out for others who struggle to be heard.'
'Your gut will tell you what’s right and what’s wrong; what’s fair and what's unfair. The hardest part—and it was the hardest part for me—is to chase your convictions with action.'
'I will be cheering you on, so will my husband, so will Archie, as you all continue marching, advocating, and leading the way forward.'
