Just south of Frankfurt, surrounded by thick forest, this is the oldest university town in Germany. Heidelberg is a very appropriate stop for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - it has been twinned with Cambridge since 1965
The establishment of a national cancer research centre in Germany was initiated by Heidelberg surgeon Professor Karl Heinrich Bauer. The Centre was set up in 1964 by resolution of the State government of Baden-Wuerttemberg as a foundation under public law. In 1975, the Centre became a member of the Association of National Research Centers. Ongoing research programmes include Cell Biology and Tumor Biology, Structural and Functional Genoics, Cancer Risk Factors and Prevention, Tumor Immunology, Innovative Cancer Diagnostics and Therapy, Infection and Cancer and Translational Cancer Research

"It's really helpful to have a visit from the Duke and Duchess as they publicise the importance of work we do here. "The UK and Germany are leaders in this field of stem cell research," said the expert who has been based in Heidelberg for seven years. He told William and Kate about the latest developments in stem cell research.
The Leeds University graduate, told them how his team focuses on the question whether and how an accumulation of DNA damage in stem cells is the causes for ageing of an organ system. Such damage may cause exhaustion of the stem cell pool and loss of the organ's capacity to regenerate. The work is particularly important in research into leukaemia.
William said, "Ladies first" when he was asked to look at the cells through a microscope. Afterwards Kate said: "It's in 3D too, which is amazing." William, who also looked through the microscope, asked how far down the line the centre's stem cell research was and added: "It's fascinating work."

Ahead of the reception the British Council said: "Both the British Council and Their Royal Highnesses William, the Duke of Cambridge, with his wife Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, share the same passion about strengthening the intercultural and international links between Britain and the world. During their visit to Germany, Prince William and his wife Catherine aim to learn what makes Berlin such a strong magnet for artists from all around the world - especially for British creative professionals."

Opened in 1913, Clärchens is one of the last remaining old ballrooms in Berlin.
'Amid the sleek new cafes, offbeat shops and modern art galleries of the buzzy Mitte district, one cultural icon looks much the way it did a century ago. Founded in 1913 by Fritz Bühler and his wife Clara, affectionately known as Clärchen, this two-storey ballroom has an air of gracefully faded grandeur.
I’d heard about this peculiar urban timewarp long before I stumbled across it one afternoon while looking for a bite to eat. The attached beer garden, decorated with exposed bulbs and dense greenery, looked so intriguingly out of place that my friends and I stepped in without thinking. After brusque bow-tied waiters served us schnitzels that dwarfed the plates beneath them, we took a peek inside the building’s well-worn facade. There, under the neon lights and silver streamers, a group of maybe 20 people were enthusiastically tangoing away. It felt oddly like trespassing on a high school dance from decades past.
I’ve since been back to Clärchens Ballhaus as a participant rather than a voyeur, doing my best to cha-cha with two left feet. But as much as I love the nostalgic vibe on the ground floor, it is the chandeliered Spiegelsaal (mirror hall) upstairs, all towering ceiling, baroque detailing and huge mirrors, that draws gasps, and crowds. This hallowed hall has witnessed raucous 1920s nightlife, covert sword duels, allied bombing, balls for war widows and, more recently, a dramatic revival, thanks to David Regehr and Christian Schulz, who saved it from dereliction in 2005.'

The pair are greeted by staff before being given a short tour of the ballroom ahead of Thursday night's reception. It is one of the last remaining ballrooms in Berlin, and played host to some of the most creative and innovative names in the world of art
Sam Riley and Game of Thrones star Thomas Wlaschiha, who plays Jaqen H'ghar on the hit show. During their chat on BBC Radio 1, William revealed they are both big fans of the show. Richard Palmer reports "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attempted to persuade Mr Wlaschiha into revealing the closely guarded secrets of what happens next in Game of Thrones after season seven premiered on Sunday. But even the popular royals could not wriggle out any hints from the tight-lipped actor. The 44-year-old thespian said: “They said they really liked Game of Thrones and have watched every series. “They wanted spoilers but I said I couldn’t tell them. I’m surprised they have time to watch such a long running series.".

Diana's Triple Pearl and Diamond Spacer bracelet. Diana wore the elegant piece on a number of occasions - most memorably with her Catherine Walker 'Elvis' outfit and Cambridge Lovers Knot Tiara. The bracelet features very distinctive 'spacers'. It would certainly seem William has gifted Kate quite a few pieces from his mother's collection

JNS: When were you aware Kate had chosen to wear your dress?
ML: I wasn’t aware she was wearing the dress until I was tagged in a picture on Instagram!
JNS: How did it feel seeing the Duchess in the dress?
I was over the moon to see The Duchess of Cambridge wearing our dress last night; she looked absolutely beautiful and so elegant. As a German born designer, based in London, seeing Catherine represent me in Berlin was a very proud moment.
JNS: Talk me through the dress...
ML: The Duchess was wearing the Teal Bird Pleated Arabella Dress from our PreFall 17 collection, which has just arrived online! The wild sparrow was one of our key motifs for the season. We created this print in-house, it was hand drawn and painted to create more character and personality. The Crystal pleating technique created a flattering, modern silhouette.
JNS: What do you think about The Duchess of Cambridge's style in general?
JNS: What do you think about The Duchess of Cambridge's style in general?
ML: She is always dressed so elegantly for both casual and formal occasions. I love that she isn’t afraid to experiment with prints and volumes, yet keeps her accessories neutral and sophisticated.
JNS: How powerful is it to have Kate endorsing your brand in this way?
ML: It doesn’t get much better than a princess wearing your brand. The images of her trip have appeared everywhere across Internet overnight - we are all very excited!

Diana wore the three-strand pearl bracelet almost 30 years ago, with her iconic Catherine Walker pearl-studded strapless gown during a 1989 trip to Hong Kong

During their 2010 engagement interview William said of his choice of ring: 'Obviously, [Diana is] not going be around to share in all the fun and excitement, so this is my way of keeping her close to it all.'

I am delighted to see in the national press that the Duchess of Cambridge chose to wear one of her late mother-in-law's favourite pearl and diamond bracelets on the Royal Tour in Germany last week. This is of particular interest to me in that it was designed by me and featured in our 1988/1989 jewellery catalogue.
In 1988 we decided to produce some jewellery and donate the proceeds from their sales to the charity, BIRTHRIGHT. For personal reasons Cherry and I had become supporters of this charity, Sir George Pinker, Cherry's gynaecologist, being its President and The Princess of Wales its Patron.
The three items that we chose for our Birthright Collection were a pair of diamond bow and pearl drop earrings, a diamond half eternity ring and a three row pearl bracelet with diamond and pearl spacers and clasp. This is the bracelet that Princess Diana wore on several occasions including at the Birthright Ball in 1989 and with her iconic Catherine Walker ‘Elvis’ dress in Hong Kong and has now been seen adorning the Duchess of Cambridge!
This look was very typical of the style of jewellery that we were making at that time. The Princess of Wales was the most wonderful inspiration for us jewellers in that she wore her jewellery with such style and panache. The choker necklaces that she used to wear spawned a whole fashion revival for this Edwardian look and I designed many variations on the theme and we sold quantities thanks to her!
