❤️

'King Charles III has been presented with Scotland's crown jewels in Edinburgh in a ceremony to mark his Coronation.

He received the crown and sceptre which form part of the Honours of Scotland. The national thanksgiving service at St Giles' Cathedral will also feature a new sword named after the late Queen Elizabeth.

Three pipers from King Charles' former school, Gordonstoun, played during the final stage of the procession.

The Stone of Destiny - which was taken to London for the King's Coronation at Westminster Abbey in May - has been returned to Edinburgh and also played a part in the service'

What are the Honours of Scotland?

Consisting of the priceless crown, sceptre and Sword of State, the Honours of Scotland were first used together at a Coronation in 1543 for Mary, Queen of Scots when she was just nine months old.

They were later used to crown her son, James VI - who went on to become James I of England - in 1567, Charles I in 1633 and Charles II in 1651. The Crown of Scotland, the impressive centrepiece of the collection, was placed on the coffin of the late Queen during a moving service at St Giles' Cathedral after her death last year.

It features a circlet made of Scottish gold with 22 gemstones, 20 precious stones including diamonds and amethysts and freshwater pearls from Scottish rivers. Four gold arches rise to an orb which is painted blue and decorated with stars and a gold cross sits on top, which is studded with a large amethyst and eight pearls.

Made of solid silver, the sceptre was a gift from Pope Alexander VI to James IV in 1494. It was re-modelled and lengthened in 1536 and has small figures of the Virgin and Child, St James and St Andrew as well as a polished globe of rock crystal.

The Sword of State was also a papal gift from Pope Julius II to James IV in 1507 and the blade features figures of St Peter and St Paul and Pope Julius's inscription. The silver-gilt handle is decorated with oak leaves and acorns to symbolise the risen Christ and the scabbard is made of wood covered in dark red velvet and mounted with silver gilt.

Scotland's crown jewels have not had a smooth or easy journey to their present-day display cabinet at Edinburgh Castle. In mid-17th century, the hoard had to be hidden from Oliver Cromwell - who had already melted down the English Crown Jewels - and they were taken to Dunnottar Castle in Aberdeenshire before being buried in a nearby church.

The bracelet dates to 1988. Nigel Milne designed the piece as part of a collection supporting Birthright, a British charity supporting mothers and babies that is now known as Wellbeing of Women. Diana became the charity’s patron in 1984; one of its founding members was Sir George Pinker, the obstetrician who delivered Prince William and Prince Harry.

The bracelet, according to the firm’s catalogue, is “an elegant three row cultured pearl bracelet” with diamond and pearl spacer sections. Diana famously wore the bracelet with her Catherine Walker “Elvis” dress in Hong Kong. Appropriately, she also wore the bracelet to the Birthright Ball in 1989.

The Four Row Japanese Pearl Choker was commissioned by the Queen from a set of the "finest cultured pearls presented to her by the Japanese government". Her Majesty's Jewel Vault notes: "The necklace includes four rows of pearls with a central diamond clasp in a curved shape, each side including three rows of diamonds that join at the top and bottom with marquise diamonds. She made her first state visit to Japan in 1975; the choker was in use by at least 1982. The Garrard book posits that it was inspired by the Queen's new daughter-in-law at the time, and she did notably loan the piece to the new Princess of Wales during a state visit from the Netherlands in 1982. It is only occasionally used by the Queen, in whose collection it still remains." Below, the Queen wearing the piece in Bangladesh in 1983.

she wore it for the funeral of both the Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Elizabeth II
