this morning
to visit
 University College London’s(UCL)
Centre for Longitudinal Studies
to meet with leading experts involved in the study
‘The Children of the 2020s’.

The Children of the 2020s Study is a new nationally representative birth cohort study of babies in England which has been commissioned by the Department for Education (DfE). The study will answer important scientific and policy questions regarding the family, early education and childcare determinants of early school success.

The study is being led by Professor Pasco Fearon, Director, Developmental Neuroscience Unit, Department of Clinical, Educational and Health Psychology, UCL and the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families, in partnership with Ipsos-MORI. Study collaborators include the UCL Centre for Longitudinal Studies, the University of Oxford and Birkbeck, University of London

"The approach of this study has particular resonance with the Duchess and her work on early childhood, as it will look at a wide range of factors that affect children’s development and education in the early years, including the home environment, the community, early years services and the broader social and economic circumstances of the family. The research is the latest in a long line of birth cohort studies in the UK and will begin recruiting up to 8,000 families in January 2022 for babies born in April, May and June 2021."

"We had answers to questions around who looked after the husband while the woman went into hospital," said Professor Goodman.

"Oh, it was different then!"

Kate asked: "Are there other cohort studies we can learn from internationally?"

Told there were similar studies in Scotland, Ireland and across Europe, she remarked: "There have been quite a lot of studies around trauma, but it's hard to measure the positive influences on early childhood. I suppose that’s what this study is going to start to do."

The Duchess also told researchers how she had noticed the impact of social issues closer to home after looking back at four generations of her own family tree.'

Our early childhoods shape our adult lives and knowing more about what impacts this critical time is fundamental to understanding what we as a society can do to improve our future health and happiness.

@UCL's landmark ‘Children of the 2020s’ study will illustrate the importance of the first five years and provide insights into the most critical aspects of early childhood, as well as the factors which support or hinder positive lifelong outcomes.

I am committed to supporting greater in-depth research in this vital area and I’m delighted to be meeting all those behind the study at this early stage.

During a roundtable discussion, the Duchess was shown graphs charting brain development from early childhood to early adulthood and how the environment plays a crucial role and also how a higher socio-economic status correlates to a greater amount of gray matter in a young child's brain.

Another slide explained how the study would look at factors like parental mental health, trauma, life events, stressors and regional and neighbourhood characteristics in relation to child development.

She asked:
"Which countries do we feel are leading on this? Which countries have a successful model we could be learning from?"

Professor Fearon replied: "I have to say the UK is not bad. We do have some brilliant programmes for young children."

has been researching her own family tree to learn more about how her ancestors’ home lives affected the adults they became. Pictured is her family tree with humble and blue blood

From coal miners, a road sweepers to earls, countesses and a former Prime Minister - who will Kate Middleton find in her family tree?

The Duchess of Cambridge was the first commoner to marry the heir to the throne in 350 years and is descended from coal miners, a road sweeper and even a prisoner.

Research into her family has revealed that the middle class princess has noble blood after all. A branch of the Middleton's family tree shows Kate can count earls, countesses and even a Prime Minister among her ancestors.

The Duchess is related to William Petty FitzMaurice, the 1st Marquess of Lansdowne, whose ancestral seat Bowood House in Wiltshire is considered one of Britain's best stately homes.

He served as Prime Minister between July 1782 and April 1783 during the reign of George III and is remembered for negotiating the peace settlement that ended the American War of Independence.

However, her bloodline also features working class roots. Sitting centre-stage in this 1919 photograph is Kate’s great-great-grandfather John Harrison, washed and scrubbed and in his Sunday best.

It is a rare and poignant portrait of a man who lived his life in the dark and chaos of the coalpit, only rarely seeing the light of day.

Surrounding him are the dynasty he created in his tiny terrace house in a lowly, grime-filled street in the North-East village of Hetton-le-Hole. He, his wife Jane and nine of their 11 children are dressed impeccably, their linen clean, their shoes shining, their faces registering the seriousness of the moment.
