The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were in Birkenhead to visit the UK’s new polar research ship the RRS Sir David Attenborough.
Kensington Palace said
the ship "will enable world-leading research to be carried out in Antarctica and the Arctic over the next 25 to 30 years. Studying these remote regions plays a crucial role in allowing us to understand the changes in our planet’s oceans, marine life and climate systems. Sir David's connections with the royal family are many. We've seen the Duchess with him on numerous occasions in her role as patron of the Natural History Museum.
During the opening of Hintze Hall, Kate quoted him in a speech in reference to the importance of experiencing the natural world:
"Sir David Attenborough has famously talked about the fact that people will not protect what they don’t first care about, and will not care about what they have never experienced."
One of Britain's national treasures, Sir David Attenborough has been a groundbreaking force with his environmental work and his documentaries; the Life series, which collectively constitute a survey of plant and animal life on earth
"It gives me great pleasure to name this ship Sir David Attenborough and may God bless her and all who sail in her".
As the ship’s sponsor, the Duchess formally christened the ship and a bottle of champagne was smashed against the hull.

spent time with a team from Cammell Laird who have been involved in the ship’s build, including young apprentices. Founded in Birkenhead in 1828, Cammell Laird specialises in ship building, repair, refit and conversion as well as providing engineering services to the energy sector. They visited scientists who showcased state-of-the art equipment which is used to carry out research whilst at sea and in Antarctica. The Duke and Duchess also met schoolchildren involved in BAS’s ‘Polar Explorer’ programme, which encourages and supports schools to enrich their teaching of STEM subjects by educating pupils about polar science and the ship’s future expeditions.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were in Birkenhead to visit the UK’s new polar research ship the RRS Sir David Attenborough.
The ship, operated by the British Antarctic Survey, will allow the UK’s research community to carry out world-leading research in Antarctica and the Artic over the next 25-30 years.
Researching these polar regions will help us to better understand our planet.
Their Royal Highnesses met some of the 30 crew and 60 researchers that the ship will carry to the polar regions, as well as schoolchildren taking part in British Antarctic Survey’s Polar Explorer programme.

Through this state-art-of-the-art new ship, the British Antarctic Survey will help to expand global knowledge of the polar oceans, and the impact of climate change on this crucial region.
As last week’s climate protests the world over, and yesterday’s report on our oceans and frozen regions demonstrated, there has never been a more important moment for this ship to get to work. And there is no person more fitting for this beacon of scientific research to be named after than you, David. You have shown us how awe-inspiring the natural world is, and also how fragile and endangered it is. And you have inspired us all to do as much as we possibly can to protect it.

What is the new research ship and what will it do?
Work on the £200million antarctic research ship began three years ago with the laying of the keel in October 2016.
It is funded by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), which is in turn funded by the non-departmental government body, the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).
It is hoped the vessel will enable new research into climate change, pollution and other environmental concerns, by studying the ocean, seafloor and atmosphere.
The ship has a range of 19,000nm, enough for a return trip from England to the Rothera Research Station in the Antarctic, or to circle the entire Antarctic continent twice.
It requires 30 crew members, but much of its work is carried out by robots, which developers say makes it more efficient and decreases its environmental impact.
The public voted to call the vessel Boaty McBoatface but that was overturned and it was named after the broadcaster
The BAS's website states: 'Marine robotics and remotely operated vehicles will capture data from the deep ocean and previously inaccessible locations under the ice. The famous Boaty McBoatface will be deployed on scientific missions in the Polar Regions.
'The polar research ship to feature a moon pool – a 4m vertical shaft running through the vessel and open to both the air (at deck level) and sea (at the hull). Using the moon pool, scientific equipment can be deployed and recovered through the centre, and thus most stable part, of the hull.
'The new polar ship for Britain will operate year-round. She will spend the northern summer supporting Arctic research cruises and the austral summer in Antarctica carrying out research programmes and transporting people and supplies to BAS research stations.
'With her ability to spend up to 60 days at sea unsupported, and an ice-strengthened hull designed to break through ice up to 1m thick, the RRS Sir David Attenborough will undertake extensive voyages.'

The Duke and Duchess of York are delighted to announce the engagement of Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice of York to Mr. Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.
Her Royal Highness and Mr. Mapelli Mozzi became engaged while away for the weekend in Italy earlier this month.
The wedding will take place in 2020. Further details will be announced in due course.
Princess Beatrice and Mr. Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi said, “We are extremely happy to be able to share the news of our recent engagement. We are both so excited to be embarking on this life adventure together and can’t wait to be married. Who designed Princess Beatrice's engagement ring?
Princess Beatrice's bespoke platinum and diamond engagement ring by British jeweller Shaun Leane is worth up to £100k, according to an expert.
The royal, 31, who is engaged to property tycoon Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, 34, showed off the stunning ring which is 'filled with personal and sentimental signifiers' in the official photographs taken by sister Princess Eugenie.
It is a fusion of Victorian and Art Deco designs and is accompanied by two additional matching bands, in distinctive Shaun Leane style.
'Princess Beatrice's is a beautiful engagement ring with a round brilliant cut diamond flanked by 4 baguette-cut diamonds,' said London Jeweller, Susannah Lovis.
'It is breath-taking particularly because all you can see is diamonds and the platinum band is hidden. It appears to be around 3.5 carats and would probably have cost in the region of £100,000.'
The ring was crafted in hand in the Shaun Leane Mayfair atelier and is set with excellent cut diamonds of the highest colour and clarity, of which all are GIA certified and ethically sourced.
The bespoke experience began with a detailed and personal consultation with the groom. Consequently, the design is filled with personal and sentimental signifiers for the couple and unique to them.
Shaun Leane says of the design: 'I am so honoured Edoardo chose to work with me to design the engagement ring for Princess Beatrice and to have been involved in this special moment in their lives.'
He added: 'The bespoke experience was a beautiful journey from imagining the design with Edoardo to the crafting of the rings.'
'Being able to incorporate both Edoardo and Princess Beatrice's characters into the design has resulted in a unique ring that represents their love and lives entwining.'
Edoardo, the son of former Olympic skier Count 《Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi》 and 《Nikki Shale》, and has been a friend of the Yorks for some time.
He holds dual British and Italian citizenship but as solely a British citizen, Mr. Mozzi is not eligible for his father's title.
His parents separated when he was young, and he has credited his mother Nikki's career as an executive in commercial real estate for his early interest in property - now building up a multi-million pound portfolio
Edoardo's mother is 《Nikki Shale》, whose second husband was Christopher Shale, a senior Tory and a close friend of former prime minister David Cameron

He died from heart disease in 2011 while in a toilet at Glasonbury Festival.
Beatrice and the rest of her family attended the funeral, with Nikki eventually marrying sculptor 《David Williams-Ellis》
