Before the ceremony, the couple received a tour of the new education and interpretation facilities and the Hall of Service where the new sculpture Sacrifice stands.
The sculpture features more than 1,700 soil samples from each NSW town, suburb, and district given as a place of address by First World War enlistees in the region.
The extension includes a water cascade on the southern side. A walkway through the cascade allows Memorial visitors to enter the new Hall of Service, exhibition galleries and education facilities.
The Anzac Memorial Centenary Extension, as it is called, was opened this year as it is the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.
The Memorial, which commemorates the sacrifices made by those who served for Australia and New Zealand, was initially designed in the 1930s by Bruce Dellitt

The Anzac Memorial is the main commemorative military monument of Sydney, Australia. It was created by the people of New South Wales as a place to remember the impact of the Great War (1914 – 1918). Although the Memorial did not open until 1934 the need for the Memorial was recognised as soon as the casualty figures from the 1915 Gallipoli campaign became public knowledge. Planning for a memorial of some kind began with the establishment of a fund on the first anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli in 1916.

The Hall of Silence, located in the centre of the building, is striking in its starkness, and has a powerful effect on visitors.
The room is circular and Rayner Hoff's sculpture Sacrifice stands in its centre. The floor is Ulam white marble, and there is a bronze 'eternal flame' that flares out from the sculpture. The ceiling curves up toward the carved marble banister that defines the Well of Contemplation, a large circular opening in the floor of the level above. This opening provides the only natural lighting for the Hall of Silence and has the effect of focusing that light onto the central sculpture.

Russell Myers reports: "The couple arrived to unveil a war memorial 84 years in the making. The Anzac Memorial, which commemorates the sacrifices made by those who served for Australia and New Zealand, was initially designed in the 1930s by Bruce Dellitt. But following the Great Depression, the finances were not available to make Mr Dellitt's vision a reality, including a four-tier cascading waterfall on the Liverpool Street side of the monument."

The Games showcase the positive impact sport has on the recovery and rehabilitation of wounded, injured and ill servicemen and women. Following the highly successful Invictus Games in London 2014, Orlando 2016 and Toronto 2017, the Sydney Games will involve 500 competitors from 18 nations competing for medals in 11 adaptive sports across Greater Sydney
began his speech with a reference to the anniversary:
'Hello Sydney. Hello Australia. And hello Invictus. On this day in 1973, my grandmother, the Queen stood in front of this Opera House and declared it open. Forty-five years later, to the day, it is my honour to be standing in front of this iconic symbol of Australia’s place in the modern world at the start of the fourth Invictus Games.'
Over the past eighteen months we've discussed Harry's dedication to Invictus.
Not only is he following in the footsteps of senior Royal members by forging a legacy for his work with veterans, he's developed into a confident statesman representing the Queen and Britain abroad with aplomb.
"Many of you will have heard me explain the genesis of these Games before. From my life-changing flight back from the battlefields of Afghanistan, to the example of America’s Warrior Games, Invictus was inspired by the experiences I had alongside our servicemen and women from many nations."
