参戦を表明

 In 1914 British Prime Minister Herbert Asquith announced at 11pm that Britain was to enter the war after Germany had violated Belgium's neutrality. The First World War or the Great War lasted until 11 November 1918 and is recognised as one of the deadliest historical conflicts with millions of casualties. A series of events commemorating the 100th Anniversary are taking place throughout the day.

to attend ceremonies marking the centenary of the outbreak of World War I. 

Upon their arrival, they were greeted by King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium

１時間の消灯イベントも行われたそう。

第一次大戦時を生きた、
当時の英国の外相グレイ氏が、大戦参戦前夜に
「ヨーロッパ中の灯りが消えていく。我々が生きている間に、この灯りが再び灯されることはないだろう」
と、口にしたということからヒントを得て、この企画が生まれたのだとか。

さすがイギリス的☆
   
国会議事堂や、
タワー・ブリッジも10時に消灯。
ロイヤル・シェイクスピア・カンパニーに、
BBCなどこれに参加。

一般にも、同様で、
お家やオフィスを消灯させることで、
参加可能。
 
 こういうことがすぐに出来るところが、
本当にスゴイなあ～
といつも思う。
