Prince William has shared how he maintains his mental health while hosting a forum for young people to mark World Mental Health Day. The royal said humour and "having a laugh" were important to him, as well as putting down screens to spend time with friends and family.

The theme for World Mental Health Day 2023 'Mental health is a universal human right' aims to improve knowledge, create conversations and drive actions to "protect everyone's mental health as a universal right".

The appearance follows the publication of new research from the Royal Foundation of the Prince and Princess of Wales, which shows the majority of young people feel their friends are struggling with their mental health. Market research company Savanta was commissioned by the foundation to conduct the online survey of 3,000 young people across the UK.

Six in ten (59%) 16-24 years old think it’s very important for young people to have greater awareness and understanding of social and emotional skills. Four in ten (39%) 16–24-year-olds feel that they don’t manage their emotions very well. Meanwhile two-thirds (65%) of 16-24 year olds say their mental health is very important to them.

A statement on the Royal Foundation website noted:
"Research has shown just how essential our social and emotional skills are for developing the kinds of positive relationships with those around us that boost our own resilience and, in turn, that of others."

Kensington Palace said:
"Exploring our Emotional Worlds brought together 100 young delegates nominated by ten leading mental health and youth engagement charities to start a conversation about how they manage their emotions and how they can be supported to build their resilience and protective factors such as healthy relationships which make it easier to navigate bumps in the road as they go through life."

In her speech, Kate said: 'Mental health is something we both care deeply about'

spoke passionately about mental health, telling guests it's "something we both care deeply about". Speaking about the importance of "the bigger picture", Kate said: "What are we trying to improve by focusing our efforts on mental health? Ultimately, we are working to build a happier, healthier world. We want to shape fairer, kinder, safer, more equal societies - societies that seek the common good and a better future together".

"Positive mental health is shaped by our ability to understand and manage ourselves as individuals, and to connect with others through our relationships, friendships, families and communities. We are living in a world however, that is changing so fast, with social media and concerns about the threat of conflict, pandemics, climate change or the cost of living, can impact our emotional wellbeing and future hopes dramatically". The Princess noted, "On top of this, this can also be a time in your lives, when you perhaps feel the vulnerability of growing independence and self-consciousness. But, by gaining deeper insight into ourselves, we'll be better equipped, to handle the external challenges we all encounter".

Coach Sarah Renton presented them to her in memory of her late daughter, Issy, who tragically took her own life earlier that year.

'Mother-of-three Sarah Renton's 17-year-old daughter Issy Phipps sadly died just weeks ago after struggling with depression.

Today Mrs Renton met another mother-of-three, Kate, during her visit to the rugby club as part of her Shaping Us campaign, and gifted her a pair of earrings made by her cousin in Issy's memory.

Kate was visibly moved by her interaction with Mrs Renton, who coaches the under-14 boys at the club, and put her arm around the mother before giving her a warm hug.

Mrs Renton later said the Princess had promised to wear the jewellery at a later date in Issy's memory'.

They were made in memory of Mrs Renton's daughter, Issy (pictured), who tragically took her own life at the age of 17 earlier this year. Kate promised to wear the jewellery after receiving them in June during a trip to the mother's rugby club
