Kate reveals that while working at Kingston Hospital –where about 13 babies are born each day – she shadowed community midwives on their daily rounds and was welcomed in to people's homes. 'I was truly touched by the trust that people placed in me, sharing their experiences and voicing their fears openly,' she says.
She also spent time in hospital clinics and on post-natal wards, experiencing the full range of services on offer at the institution.

Ahead of 2020’s International @who#YearoftheNurseandMidwife, The Duchess of Cambridge has written an open letter to midwives across the UK — visit the link in our bio to read the full letter.
Writing in her letter, The Duchess said:
•
“You are there for women at their most vulnerable; you witness strength, pain and unimaginable joy on a daily basis.
•
Your work often goes on behind the scenes, and away from the spotlight. Recently I was privileged enough to witness a small section of it first hand, spending several days at Kingston Hospital’s Maternity Unit.
•
Although this was not my first encounter with the care and kindness provided by midwives across the country, it gave me a broader insight into the true impact you have on everybody you help.
•
Over the last few years, I’ve dedicated a significant amount of my work to the Early Years - the pivotal period of development between pregnancy and the age of 5 where children build crucial foundations for life.
•
Your role in supporting this critical phase of development extends far beyond the complicated task of delivering a baby successfully. The help and reassurance you provide for parents to be and parents of newborns is just as crucial. It goes a long way in building parents’ confidence from the start, with lifelong impact on the future happiness of their children.
•
I want to thank you for all that you do. It has been a real privilege learning from you so far, and I look forward to meeting and learning from even more of you in the coming years and decades”.

An Open Letter from The Duchess of Cambridge to Midwives
Ahead of 2020's International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, The Duchess of Cambridge has written an open letter to midwives across the country.
Dear Midwives,
Next year the world turns its attention to the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, and recognising and celebrating the humbling work that you and your colleagues do day in, day out, to improve the lives of others. You are there for women at their most vulnerable; you witness strength, pain and unimaginable joy on a daily basis.
Your work often goes on behind the scenes, and away from the spotlight. Recently however, I was privileged enough to witness a small section of it first hand, spending several days at Kingston Hospital's Maternity Unit. Although this was not my first encounter with the care and kindness provided by midwives across the country, it gave me a broader insight into the true impact you have on everybody you help.
Over the last few years, I've dedicated a significant amount of my work to the Early Years - the pivotal period of development between pregnancy and the age of 5 where children build crucial .foundations for life. Your role in supporting this critical phase of development extends far beyond the complicated task of delivering a baby successfully.
The help and reassurance you provide for parents to be and parents of newborns is just as crucial. It goes a long way in building parents' confidence from the start, with lifelong impact on the future happiness of their children.
The Early Years are more critical for future health and happiness than any other moment in our lifetime. Even before we are born, our mother's emotional and physical health directly influences our development and by the age of 5 a child's brain has developed to 90 per cent of its adult size. Your role at the very start of this period is therefore of fundamental importance.
During my time at Kingston I accompanied community midwives on their daily rounds and was welcomed in to people's homes. I was truly touched by the trust that people placed in me, sharing their experiences and voicing their fears openly. I also spent time in hospital clinics and on post-natal wards. No matter the setting, I was continually struck by the compassion that those of you I spent time with showed, and the incredible work ethic you demonstrated on behalf of your entire profession - not only performing your rounds but working tirelessly through the night to support people that were at their most vulnerable.
The founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale - whose 200th anniversary we celebrate next year, once said: "I attribute my success to this: I never have or took an excuse" and it is that mantra that I have seen time and time again in all of my encounters with you. You don’t ask for praise or for recognition but instead unwaveringly continue your amazing work bringing new life into our world. You continue to demonstrate that despite your technical mastery and the advancement of modern medicine, it is the human to human relationships and simple acts of kindness that sometimes mean the most.
So as we look ahead to next year, I want to thank you for all that you do. It has been a real privilege learning from you so far, and I look forward to meeting and learning from even more of you in the coming years and decades.

The seafood eatery, run by husband and wife Bev and Pierre Koffel, was scouted by Meghan and Harry’s security for a potential dining spot.
But the owners say they had to turn the couple’s request down due to the high security that would be required.
Bev told local paper Vancouver Sun: “They said ‘How did you figure out who we were?’ And I said ‘It wasn’t too hard’.”
She said her husband was the one who answered the phone when the royals wanted to make a reservation, and turned them down due to the security required.
She said to the local paper: “You know what Pierre’s like. We’ll see what happens.”
She said: “They jog around, so they’ve been seen. It’s kind of exciting. I hope everything goes fine for them.
Mrs Koffel added that she had bought two books for the family as a gift and planned to send them to them, saying: “I hope to meet them one day. I hope they get my books.”
Buckingham Palace confirmed the family's holiday plans in a statement, saying they were “enjoying sharing the warmth of the Canadian people and the beauty of the landscape”.

Tight security: Cameras and fences were erected at the property as early as December 19, and the mansion is now swarming with security guards

A friend of a previous resident, 41-year-old Hsin Pai, said the property used to be owned by a German actress
The property was then bought around 2010 by Bernadette Wolfswinkel, the ex-wife of disgraced Arizona property magnate Conley Wolfswinkel who was convicted of bank fraud and was accused of owing US taxpayers $2 billion
Mystery multi-millionaire: In 2012, Wolfswinkel, 70, listed the property for $14.1 million with a Sotheby’s realtor. Wolfswinkel’s friend, Pai, said she sold the mansion to a wealthy businessman around that time

The royals were snubbed when their team approached the Deep Cove Chalet, an upscale eatery in North Saanich, Vancouver Island, to make reservations for dinner.
The seafood eatery, run by husband and wife Bev and Pierre Koffel, was scouted by Meghan and Harry’s security for a potential dining spot.
But the owners say they had to turn the couple’s request down due to the high security that would be required.
The Sussexes have broken with tradition this year and are enjoying a Christmas break with Meghan Markle's mum in Canada rather than staying in the UK.
Mrs Koffel said she wanted the Sussexes to have the best time possible and also privacy as they celebrate their first Christmas with baby Archie.
She said: “They jog around, so they’ve been seen. It’s kind of exciting. I hope everything goes fine for them.
“They’re breaking away from tradition and I just wish them all the best.”
“Let them have their peace and quiet. For us to be so lucky to have them in the area, how lucky is that?
“I wish them all the privacy they can possibly get. They deserve it.”
Mrs Koffel added that she had bought two books for the family as a gift and planned to send them to them, saying: “I hope to meet them one day. I hope they get my books.”
Buckingham Palace confirmed the family's holiday plans in a statement, saying they were “enjoying sharing the warmth of the Canadian people and the beauty of the landscape”
Ahead of their arrival, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted: “ Prince Harry , Meghan, and Archie, we’re all wishing you a quiet and blessed stay in Canada.
“You’re among friends, and always welcome here.”
Over the past week, the couple have been seen jogging together and going out on bikes on the west coast
