Tuesday 1st October: Harry in Malawi and Meghan in Johannesburg, South Africa

Harry will travel to Mauwa Health Centre, Pharmacy in a Box and Youth Reproductive Health Outreach programme. He will tour Mauwa Health Centre and then depart Malawi for South Africa.

Meanwhile, Meghan will attend a roundtable discussion with the Association of Commonwealth Universities in Johannesburg. 
She will meet academics and students to discuss the challenges faced by young women in accessing Higher Education.

Meghan will also visit a school to learn about the work of a local charity, which receives UK Aid funding for its work to raise awareness of and tackle sexual violence in schools. 

Harry and Meghan will then be reunited to resume their joint programme in Johannesburg.

PART ①

Meghan and Archie travelled from Cape Town to Johannesburg on Saturday whilst Harry's been travelling in Botswana, Angola and Malawi. Buckingham Palace said this tour was very much designed to "demonstrate a modern UK-Africa partnership in action". 

The trip was requested by the government ahead of UK-Africa Investment Summit in London 2020, and the Duke and Duchess were said to be delighted to have the opportunity to highlight positive partnerships. The UK's trade with Africa is valued at £33 billion. 

On Sunday, Harry visited the Campaign For Female Education which has been supported by the UK and the Queen's Commonwealth Trust. 
Joining via Skype, Meghan said: "We’re just so proud as president, and vice-president of the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, that we can support you in everything that you do because we cannot begin to express how valuable and vital that work is, we’re just incredibly proud to be part of it."

The Duchess also touched on her visit to Victoria Yards. "Yesterday I had a really interesting conversation about the economy and well-being. I think so much of what we should be talking about and energies should be focused on, specifically with the ACU is supporting people to know if you don't have the support that is necessary, that you feel you can keep taking the next step, then you're stumbling in growth. I went to University. It takes a village doesn't it?" Meghan referenced the importance of family support and scholarships in her own journey.

Meghan delivered remarks
'As patron of the ACU it has been an incredible year now and we are really working to advocate for what is truly and deeply important to me: education and higher education, specifically is such a key element for growth, for economic growth and personal growth.

'I think so much of what we should be talking about at ACU is supporting people to know that... you can take the next step. So much is about having the support and scholarships and funding for students. 

That was the reason I was able to attend university. At the same level you need to have that support on the inside to be able to give as much back to those in the education system.'

Meghan was very excited to announced three new gender grants. "This is key - obviously they are going to be in universities here. The goal here is to be able to have gender equality, to be able to support women as they are working in higher education and research". Meghan continued: "When a woman is in power it changes absolutely everything in the community, and starting in an educational atmosphere is really a key point of that."

The Duchess also announced four new Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Scholarships. Students from Tanzania, Zambia and Nigeria have been selected to study in South Africa. Meghan continued: "I think what is so special about this and part of what's incredible about the Commonwealth in and of itself is that 53 countries all so varied with this Commonwealth, with this universality that connects all of us. I'm thrilled given the context of what's happening in South Africa which I've been following so closely, that we're able to do our small part through the ACU to support people who are just eager to learn." 

'I can't screw up!' Meghan Markle checks her notes to make sure impassioned speech on gender equality in education is word perfect 

The Duchess of Sussex joked that she 'couldn't screw up' today as she checked her notes during a speech in South Africa about gender equality in higher education.

Meghan was carrying out a solo engagement at the University of Johannesburg when she paused to consult her note card during a round table discussion.

She was speaking to students and academics at the Association of Commonwealth Universities discussion about the challenges faced by young women in education.

Meghan told her audience: 'It's very exciting today, and I will use a note card for this because my goodness, this last bit I can't screw up.'

This was greeted by laughs, before she announced three 'gender grants' for the university and two others - Stellenbosch, and the University of Western Cape.

During her impassioned speech, the American former actress also said that when a woman is empowered it 'changes absolutely everything' in the community.

Meghan was without her husband Prince Harry today, who is in Malawi on the penultimate day of their ten-day overseas tour in southern Africa. 

Meghan, who was greeted by screaming fans today, took on the role of the ACU's patron in January from the Queen, who held the position for 33 years.

She said: 'The goal here is to be able to have gender equality, to be able to support women as they are working in research and higher education roles.

'And also to be able to have workshops, convene things that are really helping people understand the importance of gender equality.

'When a woman is empowered it changes absolutely everything in the community and starting an educational atmosphere is really a key point of that.'

She also spoke about her own experience of being able to attend university. Meghan said: 'If you don't have the support that is necessary that you feel that you can keep taking the next step then you're stunted in growth.'

She added: 'I went to university. It takes a village, doesn't it, to sort of piece it together for people to be able to finance that. Families chipping in, scholarship, financially all those things that were the reason that I was able to attend university.

'But at the same level you need to have that kind of support on the inside for educators to be able to give as much as they can back to those who are in the educational system.'

The duchess, who wore her hair down and was in a £95 khaki Banana Republic double-breasted trench dress, is a promoter of accessible education. 

The Duke of Sussex, meanwhile, visited a health centre in Malawi today to learn about the challenges it faces serving the local community.

Johannesburg is South Africa's biggest city, it began as a 19th-century gold-mining settlement. It's sometimes referred to as 'Egoli' meaning 'place of gold'. I was interested to learn the leafy city is home to ten million trees across parks, streets and private gardens. Below, an overview of landmarks and architecture.

Governments must do more to serve the needs of poor and excluded women, and to protect and advance their rights."

'We work closely with people living in poverty and exclusion, civil society organisations, social movements and supporters. Together, we deliver grassroots programmes, provide emergency relief and campaign for things such as women’s economic rights, tax justice and climate justice.

Our work falls into four broad areas: women, politics and economics, land and climate, and emergencies. We have a particular focus on women’s rights; it’s a thread that runs through all our work.

ActionAid was founded as a charity in 1972. In the 1990s, we adopted a human rights-based approach to development. In 2003, we established the ActionAid International federation. Our head office is in Johannesburg, South Africa. We also have hubs in Asia, the Americas and Europe.'

Afterwards, 
Meghan travelled to meet with a group of girls aged 12-16 who have suffered domestic and sexual violence. 
A staff member from an organisation called Teddy Bear Clinic Group told the Duchess how they offer support to the girls through an after school club. 
Sussex Royal posted: 
"These girls have come out of situations of abuse and degradation and have found their sense of self, purpose, and confidence in the spirit of sisterhood and community in The Girls Club. The Duchess described them as role models for all. For the privacy and protection of these young women, no photos of this visit will be shared."
