THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE WILL VISIT SOUTH LONDON
Friday 27th March 2015
Engagement 1:
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will visit the Stephen Lawrence Centre, 39 Brookmill Road, London SE8, to tour the facility and meet Charitable Trust members.
Their Royal Highnesses will be accompanied by Baroness Doreen Lawrence
of Clarendon as they tour the building. They will meet with staff and
volunteers in the reception before seeing the Harris Academy law
workshop in the Centre's lecture room. The royal party will be shown a
display of some of Stephen Lawrence's architectural work. The Duke and
Duchess will then meet with SLIK (Stephen Lawrence Instils Knowledge)
Magazine editors in the PC room who will be working on The Write Way
project. An exhibition of work by the Architectural Bursary recipients
will conclude the tour. Before departure the royal party will sign the
Centre's visitors' book and The Duchess of Cambridge will be presented
with a posy of flowers.
Background:
The Stephen Lawrence Centre in Deptford, designed by renowned architect David Adjaye OBE, is home to the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust and was set up in memory of Stephen. It is a place for community learning and social research, inspiring and motivating young people. The space is available for conferences, meetings, training and seminars. The Stephen Lawrence Centre was opened in 2008 as a centre of excellence for architecture and design and the wider built environment. The pattern in the façade is designed by Turner Prize winner Chris Ofili.
The centre also hosts community based programmes for all ages including programmes in IT, creative arts and multi-media. In addition, the centre is a favoured venue for learning and development programmes for businesses of all types and size.
The Write Way project is a digital magazine and website project which offers young people aged 16-26 the opportunity to create, design and manage a digital magazine and interactive website.
Engagement 2:
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will visit XLP at Christ Church, 1 Highland Road, London SE19.
During their visit to Christ Church, Their Royal Highnesses will be accompanied by Patrick Regan, OBE, CEO of XLP and Hannah Bourazza, XLP Mentoring Manager for Lewisham. In the main body of the church the royal party will be seated with staff, volunteers and supporters of XLP, as well as young people from each of the boroughs in which XLP works, to watch an Arts Showcase presentation by young performers who have been through XLP’s Arts Programme. The Duke and Duchess will then be invited onto the stage to meet and thank the performers. They will be presented with XLP shirts bearing the logo, “I refuse to believe this is a lost generation”. Afterwards Their Royal Highnesses will meet key volunteers and supporters of XLP.
Background:
XLP stands for “The eXceL Project” a charity working to create positive futures for young people from inner London boroughs. In 1996, in response to a stabbing in a school playground, the school’s headmaster asked Patrick Regan, a local church based youth worker, to come into the school and work with their students and teachers to help with difficult behavioural issues. This was the beginning of XLP, a Christian charity that has an emphasis on being faith-based, but not faith-biased: XLP works equally with young people of all faiths and none. Those who work at XLP share a common passion: to serve the community by meeting the social, educational and behavioural needs of young people, and empowering them to make wise lifestyle choices and to realise their potential. XLP now serves young people in schools and communities across seven inner-London boroughs (Southwark, Lewisham, Greenwich, Newham, Tower Hamlets, Camden and Islington).
The Arts Showcase programme is focused on encouraging pupils, especially those who for various reasons struggle academically, to express themselves in their own unique way through dance, comedy, drama, rap and singing. This arts programme, whose primary focus is on ’showcase’ and not ’competition’, encourages these pupils and aims to raise their self-esteem, the sense of their own potential, and help them to set goals and work hard to achieve them. Running throughout the year with the assistance and coaching of the schools' arts and music departments and the XLP team, pupils enter the XLP showcase school auditions. The best acts then participate in a borough final, the winners of which then enter a grand final.
Engagement 3:
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will visit an XLP community bus and the XLP mobile recording studio on the Hazel Grove Estate, Sydenham, London SE26.
Their Royal Highnesses will view the facilities provided on the XL-R8 Community Bus Project where they will meet a group of young people from across the London boroughs who have engaged with XLP projects over a number of years and hear about some of the issues they face. The Royal party will then meet a group of young people and family members with whom XLP works on the Hazel Grove Estate.
Afterwards the royal party will visit the X-Mobile Recording Studio, which is parked alongside. They will meet another group of young people who have benefited from the project and an apprentice with XLP.
Background:
The XL-R8 Community Bus Project has been at the heart of XLP’s holistic approach to community work in inner city estates for the past 10 years. The Bus project acts as an accessible point of contact for many young people. XLP's two specially modified double decker buses travel, every week, to 17 of the 24 inner-London estates where XLP work, targeting areas where there are little or no youth work facilities available. Here, young people find help and advice, a safe place to be and a sympathetic ear, alongside access to computers, games consoles, a music studio, chill out space, and arts and crafts areas. The buses provide accessible drop-in sessions, which include 1-2-1 mentoring, cooking lessons and small group activities.
In 2008 XLP, EMI, MTV and the Met Police collaborated to create the X-Mobile studio. Converted from an old police riot van as part of MTV’s “Pimp My Ride” TV show this superbly equipped mobile recording studio has since been working in schools, pupil referral units and on estates. The project works each year with over 140 young people. In small group van sessions, young people are encouraged to express the struggles that they face through their music and learn how to operate recording, editing and production equipment.
