『Bletchley Park ： Britain's World War II code-breaking site』
the central site of the UK's Government Code and Cypher School during WWII

 @ Buckinghamshire

第二次世界大戦中
コードブレーキング（暗号読解）用地の拠点であった
"Bletchley Park"
 を訪問されたキャサリン妃☆

この敷地内のオリジナル施設の
約一年にも及んだ、修復プロジェクトの完成を記念☆

この訪問は、ある意味個人的な意味合いも深くあったようで、
なんと、
ここトップシークレット本部で、
キャサリン妃の父方の祖母
《Valerie Glassborow》
が、働いていた！！！のだとか。 


パパ：マイケル・ミドルトンさんの母
ミス Glassborow は、
《Peter Middleton》 と結婚する前、
双子の妹？姉？、《Mary》さんと共に、
@ Bletchley Park の中で働いていた 9000人の一人で、
”Hut 16” （今回修復され、Hut 6） で働いていた、 
民間のメンバー スタッフだった。

ご訪問中、
世界第二次大戦中、コードブレーカーとして働いていた
ベテランの方々とお会いになり、
展示やデモンストレーションをご覧になったりした。
そして今回の、８百万ポンドをかけ、Visitorセンターをオープンするプロジェクト
 ”Heritage Lottery Fund restoration project”
の実現の為に関わった、
デザインやマネージメントのチーム、
そしてサポーターの方々ともお会いに☆


その中に、なんと
キャサリン妃の祖母
《Valerie Glassborow》さんの同僚であった
《Lady Marion Body》が！！！
当時、どのように若い女性達が、
センター(station)から苦労して聞き取りながら、
共に働いていたかを説明。

《Valerie》さんの役割は、
《Lady Marion》同様、
事務的（管理的）なことで、
ステーションの聞き取りチェックなどをされていたそう。

その仕事は、極めて退屈な仕事であったとも告白。
でもそこは、やはり若かったので、
それなりに楽しみを見つけてやっていた、とも。


キャサリン妃の祖母＆祖父、
お二人は
1946年の戦争が終わったあと、結婚☆
 マイケルさんを含む、４人の子供に恵まれた。
祖母《Valerie》 さんは、2006年9月に、82才でお亡くなりに。
祖父《Peter》 さんは、2010年11月2日、90才で亡くなられましたが、
その方の死去により、
ウィリアム王子とキャサリン妃の婚約発表は、
当初の予定より、遅くなったのだとか。

'Valerie and Mary were among the first to know the war had ended. Lady Marion Brody, who worked with the Glassborow twins, recalls: "On 15th August 1945 Valerie and Mary and I and two other girls were on the day shift, which was rather fortunate. Mr Williams came in, he was smiling, he said, 'Well done girls, a signal's been intercepted from Tokyo to Geneva; the Japanese are about to surrender.' We just sat there, shocked into absolute silence. It was a great moment, one that I've remembered all my life."

Valerie and Mary Glassborow went on to marry the Middleton brothers.'

talks to Bletchley veteran Lady Marion Body, who knew her grandmother, Valerie Glassborow, who died in 2006

 

Lady Body, 90, 

chatted to The Duchess of Cambridge in a tiny room in Hut 6, surrounded by period furniture and effects.
Speaking about her grandmother's work Her Royal Highness told Lady Body: "When I was a young girl, I did ask granny about it", but it is known that Mrs Middleton did not speak much about her wartime duties.
The 90-year-old said after talking to The Duchess: "It was tedious, we were monitoring what signals were being picked up.
"The radio stations, called Y stations, were listening and they used to send in, I think every 15 minutes, the call signs they were picking up and we had to check they were doing the right thing.
"The Duchess's grandmother worked on the same desk as me. I had been at secretarial college with those two girls so I knew them very well.
"They were fun, when you have such a boring job you had to get on well. We knew exactly what we were doing - it was part of the war effort."
The success of Bletchley Park in breaking the German cypher systems, Enigma and Lorenz, was key to defeating the Nazis and has been credited with shortening the war by two years.

 Valerie Glassborow (pictured centre right at her 1946 wedding to Peter Middleton) is the Duchess of Cambridge's grandmother and worked at Bletchley Park

Among the achievements of those working at Bletchley Park was creating one of the world's earliest computers which was used to decode Nazi messages

年齢問わず、話のネタになるクイーン。さすがだ・・・・・
