V&Aの

visited Dundee in 2015 for a day of engagements.
The coastal city is a short drive from St Andrews University, where the couple met, and the night before their first official visit they stayed there. It was a fantastic opportunity to reminisce and revisit the place they called home during the first years of their relationship

『V&A Dandee Official Opening』

The establishment of Scotland’s first design museum, V&A Dundee, was made possible because of the unique collaboration between V&A, the University of Dundee, Abertay University, Dundee City Council, the UK and Scottish governments, the National Lottery and Scottish Enterprise. The museum, which is at the heart of a £1 billion waterfront regeneration plan, is already bringing significant economic and social benefits to the local area, helping to reshape the city’s future as a hub for the creative industries.

Earlier this month, the museum was named the world's best public building.
The Scotsman reports:
'Dundee's V&A museum has been named the world's best new public building - ahead of flagship cultural projects in Qatar, Beijing and Taiwan, as well as a visitor centre at Apple's California headquarters. The £80 million project on Dundee's waterfront was recognised by international architecture and design bible Wallpaper along with Milan, which was crowned the world's best city, a hotel perched on the edge of cliff in South Korea and a restaurant in Copenhagen.
The verdict from Wallpaper* on V&A Dundee, which is the centrepiece of a £1 billion waterfront regeneration project, described it as resembling "a moored ship." It stated: "The highly sculptural V&A Dundee is Japanese architect Kengo Kuma’s first UK building – and Scotland’s first dedicated design museum. "The ragged cliffs of north eastern Scotland inspired the composition’s distinct shape, clad in some 2,500 sheets of layered horizontal cast stone panelling. "Yet the concrete structure appears light, bearing an abstracted resemblance to the prow of a moored ship. Kuma wanted this building to welcome visitors with a strong design gesture.'

V&A Dundee has welcomed over 380,000 visitors since opening its doors in September

The Duchess of Cambridge's speech in full

'William and I are so pleased to be back here in Dundee to celebrate the opening of this wonderful museum today. Thank you so much for inviting us.

Last February, I was delighted to   become Patron of The V&A in London. Now, nearly a year later, I’m thrilled to be standing in a brand new V&A: one which has been built for the city of Dundee and for Scotland, and which is already picking up international awards. In its first four months alone, it welcomed over 360,000 visitors – a truly remarkable feat.
'Walking around this world-class space, it’s easy to see how Scotland’s first dedicated design museum is already inspiring the next generation, by providing a new learning space for discovery. I have been captivated by the breathtaking architecture, and the sheer range of design on display.
'But most of all I’ve been moved by the passion of the people who work here, and the dedication of all those who have helped make this important project to succeed.
'I believe we should celebrate all our leading galleries, museums, and cultural centres playing a greater role in communities, not just in London, but up and down the countrytoo. The cultural riches of the UK belong to all people of the UK.
'This is what V&A Dundee has achieved. The partners involved in this project from the local area, Scotland, and the UK more broadly all deserve enormous credit for the way you have collaborated to make this happen.
'I hope that this museum will serve as an inspiration to others, by showing how great things can be achieved when different communities all pull together. With this thought in mind, I am pleased to declare V&A Dundee "officially" open. I wish you all every success for the future.'

What is the V&A Dundee and when did it open?

The £80 million landmark building - billed as Scotland's first design museum - first opened to the public in September.
The first V&A museum anywhere in the world outside London, the building designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma on the banks of the River Tay is the centrepiece of an ongoing £1 billion regeneration of Dundee's waterfront.
IMuseum director Philip Long said: 'V&A Dundee is an ambitious new international museum and we are honoured that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge today declared the museum officially open.'
'V&A Dundee is at the heart of Dundee's transforming waterfront and is a key part of the city's plans for an exciting future.

The V&A Dundee, which was officially opened by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The £80 million landmark building - billed as Scotland's first design museum - first opened to the public in September 2018
'Within our remarkable building, designed by Kengo Kuma, we are proud to host world-class permanent galleries and remarkable exhibitions that have already delighted and inspired hundreds of thousands of people.'
Lord Lieutenant Ian Borthwick, Lord Provost of Dundee, said: 'I am delighted to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to V&A Dundee.
'This magnificent building is continuing to raise the city's global profile and celebrates Scotland's rich cultural heritage.
'Dundee is a Unesco City of Design, a place where culture is helping to transform people's lives. This museum has already brought huge benefits to the city of Dundee.'

One little girl stroked Kate's hair much to her amusement

"Photographer Mark Stewart, who was among those capturing the visit, says that Kate told a woman that “Louis is a fast crawler.”
Kate also had 5-year-old Prince George and 3-year-old Princess Charlotte on her mind. Stewart adds, “She told another woman that she hopes to bring her children here."

But then the Duke and Duchess will do something that I’ve not seen a senior member of the Royal Family do since I started reporting this brief nearly two years ago.
William and Kate will visit a factory which has been earmarked for closure where 850 people are facing redundancy.

The Michelin factory in Dundee makes tyres which are no longer needed, according to the company.

Last year, Michelin announced it would close the plant in the middle of 2020.

Clearly, it was a huge blow to the workforce here and a set back for Dundee’s economy.
William will make a short speech at the site and then the royal couple will attend a meeting of Michelin Action Group which is looking to find a new use for the factory and save as many jobs as they can.

William and Kate will hear about what it’s been like to live under the cloud of uncertainty caused by Michelin’s announcement.

And this won’t be a one off.
Kensington Palace wants to do this sort of visit more often, particularly as William and Kate, along with Harry and Meghan, have campaigned for better understanding of the variety of causes of mental health problems.

There is much to commend Dundee to visitors but whatever steps forward this city took with the opening of V&A Dundee and the regeneration of its waterfront, the prospect of losing so many good jobs will set this place back.

That two senior royals should want to hear about tough times facing a group of workers - as well as celebrate British success - is a welcome step.

Lessons from history show us that the better the Royals connect with all citizens, in all walks of life, facing good times and bad - the better they will understand the people of the UK, on whose support the institution of Monarchy ultimately relies.

Prince William meets with workers and trade union leaders as 850 Michelin staff face jobs losses as devastating closure of doomed tyre plant looms

By Rebecca English
Prince William took the unusual step yesterday of sitting down with union leaders, officials and families affected by the devastating closure of a Michelin tyre factory.
With his wife the Duchess of Cambridge, he met some of the 850 workers due to lose their jobs after the French company suddenly announced its intention to close the plant in Dundee last November.
The couple also attended a meeting with the Michelin Action Group – comprising union officials, management, and government and council representatives – which is looking for ways to reuse the site and save livelihoods.
With feeling over the loss of the factory running high, the afternoon could have proved to be a tricky one for William, 36, who also spoke at the meeting.
But in an assured performance, he told those gathered around the table that he was ‘willing them to succeed’ and praised the way that management, unions and workers alike were trying to find a constructive way forward.
According to royal sources, the prince was keen to ‘reassure local people they aren’t forgotten’ and wants to carry out similar visits in the future.
There are suggestions that William’s greater ‘statesman-like’ role may be down to his new private secretary, Simon Case, who joined his office last year from the Brexit Department.
The position of private secretary is the most senior one in a royal household and Mr Case’s appointment was seen as crucial for William as he moves forward in the next stage of his life as a full-time working royal and future Prince of Wales.
Kate also won fans during a walkabout in the city. In a tartan coat by Alexander McQueen with a Black Watch-style pattern, she laughed as she allowed a young girl to reach out from the crowd and stroke her hair.
William told the action group: ‘We have come from a meeting with many of the workers and families that will be directly affected by the decisions on the future of the Michelin factory.
‘The factory has been a huge part of Dundee’s very fabric. It has been a key employer for generations, and has helped sustain the local economy for nearly 50 years. For everyone affected, the hope is that all of you sat in this room can find a positive way forward.
‘You all deserve enormous credit for sitting around this table together to find a constructive way forward.
‘It is understandable that there are different views about what is the right course to take.
‘As I have just heard, when a community faces uncertainty, people feel more optimistic when leaders such as yourselves work together for that community.’
Michelin announced last year that it would close its factory, the biggest left in Dundee, by mid-2020 after it was deemed ‘unsuitable’. The company said the facility, which opened in 1971 and specialised in smaller tyres, has suffered because of a shift in the market towards low-cost products from Asia.
The Unite union called it a ‘hammer-blow’ to the city and workers were left bitter.
But since then the company has joined the taskforce to find a solution for the site and made a deal with Scottish ministers to repurpose the factory in an effort to secure a future in low-carbon transport and manufacturing.
