《A conjugal Coat of Arms of William & Catherine's》


A Conjugal Coat of Arms was created for the Duke and Duchess in 2013 that combines both William's and the Middleton's designs, representing the two as a married couple. William's coat of arms on the left was awarded to him on his 18th birthday and incorporates the emblems of the UK: the three lions of England, the lion of Scotland and the harp of Ireland. The blue garter surrounding it translates as 'Shame to those who think evil of it' and symbolizes William's title of Knight Companion in the Order of the Garter. The three pointed collar, which shows he is the heir to the throne, has a red scallop shell derived from the Spencer coat of arms. The golden lion sitting at the very top facing forward is William's personal crest and the large coronet signifies his royal rank. The Middleton crest on the right was created in 2011, just before Kate's marriage to William. It features three leafy acorns, representing the three Middleton children. The acorns were also chosen for the analogy that they grow into great oaks, a symbol of England and of strength. Oaks were also very plentiful in Berkshire, where the children grew up. The large gold chevron represents Carole Middleton as the heart of the family while the two smaller white chevrons represent the family's love of skiing. Red and blue were used as they are the colours on the British flag. Kate's had a tied blue ribbon to show she was unmarried but this was removed for their combined version. The original was also a lozenge shape, turned into a shield upon marriage. Both of their shields are supported by a royal lion and unicorn. Flowing out from the top of the coat of arms is a mantling representing the slashed cloth worn by knights during the crusade. Coat of arms cost around £4,000 to create and marked a rise in the Middleton's social standing as well as Kate's future as Queen Consort. James Middleton will be the only one able to pass down the Middleton coat of arms to his children while his sisters could only use theirs during their lifetime. As with their father, at the age of 18 Prince George and Princess Charlotte will also be assigned a royal coat of arms and this will be specific to them.
