The royal cypher of King Charles III was unveiled on Monday, marking a new era of the monarchy
It consists of the initials of the King's name Charles and title Rex, as well as the Roman numeral III

The king's mother, Queen Elizabeth II, featured the St Edward's Crown in her royal cypher
Royal cyphers can be traced back to the House of Tudor, which began with the reign of Henry VII

Along with the Royal Household mail the cypher will be used by government departments and appear on government buildings, state documents and on some post boxes in the coming months and years

The use of cyphers can be traced back to the House of Tudor, the Royal Mint states. They were used as a means of identification and appeared with the Royal Arms. The graphic above shows the changing face of official cyphers of Britain's monarchs, dating back to the reign of Queen Victoria

King Charles' new cypher has caused a stir on social media due to its startling resemblance to Cristiano Ronaldo's own personal logo.

The monarch's monogram was released by Buckingham Palace on Monday, consisting of the initials of his name Charles and title Rex - Latin for King - as well as the Roman numeral III and a representation of the Tudor Crown in a reference to his grandfather, George VI.

The cypher is the personal property of the King and was selected by him personally from a series of designs prepared by the College of Arms.

However, many were quick to notice its similarity to the Manchester United star's own branding, created using his initials and shirt number.

The CR7 trademark is used for a host of endorsements including underwear, perfume and leather shoes.

Comparisons were also made with the crest of Real Madrid - who Ronaldo played for between 2009 and 2018 - and that of the Colorado Rockies baseball team, as well as a previous badge of Rangers FC.

Further comparisons were also made with the old badge previously used by Scottish football giants Rangers

Movie buffs noticed that the 2006 Clive Owen film Children of Men - a dystopian thriller set two decades in the future - features a scene where a police officer is sporting the producers' prediction of what Charles' cypher would look like

The King's cypher is perhaps best known for appearing on items including postboxes and state signage, but it is also used by government departments and by the Royal Household for franking mail.

A Scottish version of the symbol features the Scottish Crown, approved by the Lord Lyon King of Arms.

Queen Elizabeth II's design featured the St Edward's Crown, which can be found on pint glasses and government buildings to police uniforms.

The Edward's Crown was chosen by George II, George III, George IV and by Elizabeth II.

The Tudor crown was depicted on the cyphers of Edward VII, Edwards VIII, George V and George VI.

The real Tudor crown was broken up and its valuable components sold after Oliver Cromwell abolished the monarchy in 1649.

Though in 2017 an amateur detectorist found the centrepiece, potentially worth £2million, under a tree in Northamptonshire - it is now at the British Museum.
